struggling with boys names

greenhairedmonster · 27/03/2012 23:32

I am expecting dc3.

we have 2 dds already. have a name (possibly) for dc3 if a girl, but struggling with boys names.

we like unusual (but not in a trendy yoooonique spelling kind of way) names - uncommon, I suppose.

anyway, names we have so far, but I am not convinced I could actually use them are:

Giles
Lyndon
Casimir

We do also like more 'usual' names, such as Edward, Dominic and Thomas but, well, they are just so, I don't know, expected I guess. most of the dd's friends younger brothers are Oliver or William or George.

What about

Lucian, nn 'Luce'

Ptolemy, nn 'Tolly'

or my all time favourite, 'Taliesin' - nn 'Tally' (its welsh i think)

newumma · 29/03/2012 21:38

Howsabout....Harris or Brodie.

abbypumpkin · 29/03/2012 21:27

I'm not a fan of Lyndon or Giles, sorry. Casimir is a character in florrie's dragons (a wizard I think) so kids would prob have heard of it.
How about Ezra, Arlo, Edwin, Thaddeus, Xavier, Axel, Quinn, Milo, Ezekiel, Felix, Tobias, dexter,

smartiesrule · 28/03/2012 23:23

or Kester

smartiesrule · 28/03/2012 23:22

Crispin is nice.

exoticfruits · 28/03/2012 23:18

I am not convinced I could actually use them

Good-don't! Edward or Thomas are lovely.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/03/2012 23:11

Edward and Thomas fine.

Giles is a bit of a 'Tory joke' name, I think.
Lyndon - not fond
Casimir - ooh no: sounds like a name for fake cashmere
Aldwyn is awful
Quite like Perry but a) I had a rat called it and b) Kevin and Perry

Edmund?
Fabian?
Julian?

greenhairedmonster · 28/03/2012 21:52

hadn't thought of Aldy as a shortening Grin

not keen on names which are (to me) middle aged man ie Kenneth, Terence, Raymond, Gene.

dh doesn't like anything which is (or can be/sounds) unisex, so Francis is out.

Is Berry short for anything? dh loves Perry (Peregrine) but I am not convinced.

I quite like Edwin (prefer Edgar), and do like Conrad but dh doesn't.

Cassian is edging towards made up, imo (apologies if it isn't)

dh is now saying he prefers Caspian to Casimir, which is just Confused all round, as he initially wouldn't even consider it. and I still reckon it's a bit named-after-place/made up to actually use.

He has also come up with Aldwyn - which is ok, but not really grabbing me.

GwenGotLost · 28/03/2012 18:10

How about Cassian?

Sorry to hear you got a rotten Lyndon Echidna

greenhairedmonster · 28/03/2012 11:44

definitely prefer Casimir to Cassius. nickname Cass is lovely, I agree.

don't like Aneurin, dh doesn't like Quentin.

Gwen - Grin re: Narnia Caspian. That's exactly why I can't quite bring myself to use it... but I do like it.

Mags - I love Laurence too, but dh vetoed

can't have Sebastian, Leon or Xander (family names, or too close to family names).

I like Jonathan, dh doesn't (he likes John, I don't)

Grin at Cuthbert. We did ponder over Bertram for a while, but would end up known as Bertie, and so crossed it off as think Bertram would be thought of as trying hard to have a cutesy nickname without using Albert/Herbert etc.

squoosh · 28/03/2012 11:36

Oh I love Cassius too. Such a beautiful name, and Cass as a nickname is a winner.
