I wouldn't think about the IRA at all, there are enough Iras for other connections surely? We were going to call ds2 Ezra, which is another name in the same ball park I think (the baby turned out to be dd).

pluckingupcourage · 28/03/2012 05:10

I like it - would think of Ira Gershwin and Ira from the Cybil TV show (who was a screenwriter I think?). A Jewish friend named her new DS Ira and I think it is a really good name for a boy.
In spite of my Irish links I would never have thought about the IRA.

lavenderbongo · 28/03/2012 04:54

There is the female name Eira, which i think is welsh and means snow. I like that name.

otterface · 28/03/2012 04:06

I'd think Ira Gershwin too.

I like it.

anonymosity · 28/03/2012 04:00

There is also the playwright, Ira Levin. Its a Jewish name, its not unpopular in New York, its nice I like it, in the same way I like Eli and Elias. Its a bit ignorant to confuse it with the I.R.A though as that is never pronounced Ira is it!

suburbophobe · 28/03/2012 00:40

Not if you live in UK - it's IRA...

charitygirl · 28/03/2012 00:35

It is DS2's name - so I lOve it! We do have a v Jewish surname tho.

HolyLentenPromiseBatman · 28/03/2012 00:30

I really like the sound of it, but I think pinktrees is right, written down it says IRA. Maybe this is a time that a yooonique spelling would be a good thing?

PineCones · 28/03/2012 00:19

It's a girl's name too in India.
I like it.
pinktrees that's a bit Hmm

MadameMessy · 27/03/2012 23:35

Are you Jewish?
Would never think of IRA connection at all, but is very definitely a Jewish name

PercyFilth · 27/03/2012 23:30

I know it's a man's name, but it still sounds feminine to me. Probably because when I was little we lived next door to a lady named Eira, which is pronounced the same way.

Plaguegroup · 27/03/2012 23:26

I love it but couldn't use it, if you have an Irish surname then someone is far more likely to make the IRA leap...

Devora · 27/03/2012 23:23

Love it. Have a soft spot for old Jewish geezer names Smile

No way would it make me think IRA.

LineRunner · 27/03/2012 23:19

It's a Jewish name.

It's got an old-fashioned ring to it, and a European cross-over to USA feel.

SundaeGirl · 27/03/2012 23:19

No

Billy Crystal's first wife left him for an Ira in When Harry Met Sally

MustControlFistOfDeath · 27/03/2012 23:17

Makes me think of Cybill

yellowflowers · 27/03/2012 23:13

Oh you are all so right. I hadn't even made the IRA connection!

Ira Levin wrote Rosemary's baby.

I loved the book, but I am not sure I like the name Ira! (also means rage in Italian)

pinktrees · 27/03/2012 21:02

There are plenty of occasions when a child's name appears in capitals. Putting this name in capitals gives IRA so I can't imagine how you could not think of the terrorists.

DoubleGlazing · 27/03/2012 20:53

I like it. I'd think of the lyricist Ira Gershwin.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 27/03/2012 20:51

I like it Smile

I wouldn't look at the name and think IRA Confused

BuckBuckMcFate · 27/03/2012 20:51

I first heard of it in a book I read and one of the characters was called Ira. I really like the name but unfortunately I do think IRA when I see it.

EdithWeston · 27/03/2012 20:48

I would also think of the Irish terrorists.
