Hi. We have come up with the following names for our second baby girl. We like them all, so please don't reply to say you hate them, just reply to say which you prefer and why. Thank you!

Rosa (DH's favourite)
Mabel (like this, as alliteration, which I love too)
Tally (my favourite, but is it too nick namey?)

Thank you again.

Like Rosa best and she would have a great inspirational namesake:

Rosa Parks, the woman who refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white person.

welovesausagedogs · 28/03/2012 14:21

Also whats your first daughter called???

Stellan · 28/03/2012 13:08

Yes, yes, yes to Mabel! Lovely. My great-grandmother was a Mable.

I don't mind Rosa but, to be honest, it doesn't bowl me over. It's just another run-of-the-mill kind of name: nothing to particularly like or dislike, in my opinion. It's a perfectly normal, sensible, wearable, feminine, versatile name and would be a very prudent choice. A good pick!

I don't think Tally is usable. It does sound like a nickname and not an established one in its own right like Sally or maybe Hallie. Could you use Talia, Talitha, Tallula/Tallulah, Natalie or even something like Talisa as her formal name?

I have had a little look on Google and Tali appears to be a 'legitimate' and established Hebrew name meaning dew. It was used by Annie Lennox for her daughter. You could use that spelling or consider Tally as a variant of it thereby enabling you to explain your choice more readily when people ask if it's short for anything. Check the pronunciation of Tali though in case it's different to Tally!

Rosa is my favourite
Not keen on Mabel
Agree that Tally sounds like a nn, I like it though

MagsAloof · 28/03/2012 12:57

Rosa is gorgeous.
Mabel is try hard old lady chic - not keen.
Tally is not nice.

marshmallowpies · 27/03/2012 18:15

I was considering Mabel yesterday as my DM was telling me about the little girl living next door to her who has that name...I think it's pretty!

Rosa is nice and a bit different from all the Roses/Rosies around at the moment.
Tally I'm afraid, unless it's short for a proper name like Tallulah or Talitha, doesn't do it for me.

NoraHelmer · 27/03/2012 18:13

DD has a friend called Rosa. She's a very pretty little girl so I'd vote for Rosa too :).

mumbaisapphire · 27/03/2012 18:10

Rosa by a very, very, very long way. I just don't see the attraction of Mabel at all. Tally - well let's just tally things up here shall we? Yup, it's still Rosa.

welovesausagedogs · 27/03/2012 17:28

Rosa is my favourite by a long way just so understated and pretty and not to common.

Mabel - i just can't imagine a human called mabel - know to many dogs and cats called Mabel to be able to imagine a little girl called mabel.

Tally - is to much of a nickname - what is it a nn for??? Just reminds me of tally-chart.

Positiveplus · 27/03/2012 17:22

Rosa is my fav - its pretty!
Mabel - not keen
Tally - I think it is too nick namey - would it be short for Tallulah?

fondantfancier · 27/03/2012 17:04

I love Mabel, DS was going to be one, and it's got a grat meaning.

Although when shouted in aYorkshire accent rather than southern accent it does change the name slightly. Pretty nn as well.

HappyJoyful · 27/03/2012 16:03

is tally short for Talitha ? not a fan but think that's the name rather than nick name..

HappyJoyful · 27/03/2012 16:02

Mabel.. don't know why best on list

anewmotivatedme · 27/03/2012 16:01

Rosa - love
Mabel - I like this, but my cousin used it, and all my parents generation of the family hated it. They immediately said Mabel under the table.
Tally - Don't dislike, but I can't help but want to follow it with tally ho old chum

FondleWithCare · 27/03/2012 12:15

Rosa is very pretty.
Mabel has an ugly sound to it IMO.
Tally sounds like a nickname, Natalie maybe?

MadMonkeys · 27/03/2012 10:10

Rosa is a beautiful elegant name - I love it.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 27/03/2012 08:37

Oh and you asked why - because it is strong, feminine and unusual.

SoFarWeAreEqual · 27/03/2012 08:36

Love Mabel. The best by far.

YummyMummybee · 26/03/2012 22:37

Rosa is gorgeous so pretty-out of interest what will the middle name be if you are having one? With Rosa you have huge scope for middle names

Mabel is lovely too-very cute & will grow with her

Don't like tally at all-I think she would constantly asked to explain her name & what its short for etc..
Let us know what you decide-tough choice though between Rosa & Mabel!

juliewoojulie · 26/03/2012 21:45

i like rosa the best too x

Oho · 26/03/2012 21:35

Rosa

DoubleGlazing · 26/03/2012 21:34

Rosa - very pretty
Mabel - OK, also Mirabel, May, Annabel
Tally - you'll get a lot of "Tally Ho" jokes. How about Matilda/Tilly?

Yama · 26/03/2012 21:14

Prefer Rosa. It's both a strong and a pretty name,

SoozyWoozy · 26/03/2012 21:11

Rosa - pretty.

Mabel - nice, but not as pretty as Rosa.

Tally - makes me think of maths! If I saw this I would think it was Tilly mis-spelt TBH. OK as a nn, but nowhere near as lovely as Rosa.

EdithWeston · 26/03/2012 20:44

Rosa: favourite by a long way: pretty yet with a strong sound, suits all ages.

Mabel: ok, but I find it a bit dull

Tally: great as a nn, but don't like it on its own - Thalia?
