What do you think of Louis as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I love it, but would never use it as I LOATHE Louis Walsh with the fire of a thousand burning suns.

blackcoffee · 18/03/2012 16:04

it's cool (Lou -ee)

Bucharest · 18/03/2012 16:03

Dislike it intensely.

Dislike Lewis intensely as well.

(but agree they are two different names with two different pronunciations)

DustyDen · 18/03/2012 15:43

Hate it. It's like "toilet-y". Loo-ey. (Irrational pet hate...)

mayanna123 · 18/03/2012 14:45

But actually it would make sense to 'Englify' the name to Louie rather than to use the original French spelling. Just like Pierre became Peter and Matthieu became Matthew etc. I think the Spanish changed it to Luis.

Catsmamma · 18/03/2012 14:42

Nah, has to be Lou-ie ....very NooYoik! :D :D

mayanna123 · 18/03/2012 14:40

The (non French) Louis I know calls himself Lou-is. I agree that that would be the natural English phonetic pronunciation.

But that is the problem with foreign names (in this case French) - you can either pronounce them the French way or the English/German/Spanish or another way. And you can certainly not expect a non French speaker to pronounce it the French way (without being told).

sonniebonnie · 18/03/2012 14:36

Only in French would Louis be pronounced without the 's'. That is because the French often drop the last 's' in words.

In German, Spanish and English you would pronounce the 's' as in Lou-is. It is a fairly popular name in Germany currently and is ALWAYS pronounced with an 's' at the end.

It seems to me that some 'posh' English speakers prefer to sound French by pronouncing it without the s. But that is just my opinion and I know that many may disagree withe me Smile.

i like it. why would anyone pronounce it like lewis? it's a totally different (and much nicer!) name!

BarbieDahl · 18/03/2012 13:39

Love it, it was on my list for a boy, but then we had 2 girls

Bellaholland · 18/03/2012 13:36

Love it! Wanted it husband didn't like!

Helohapp · 18/03/2012 13:16

I think we were going to go with the Lou-ie pronunciation.

DS's best friend is called Louis (prounounced the french way, as it should be) and I love it. It really suits him.

I agree with lemniscate about choosing Lewis instead if you want it pronounced the English way.

usualsuspect · 18/03/2012 13:11

I love it, pronounced Lou -is though

lemniscate · 18/03/2012 13:10

As long as you pronounce it Looie, i love it! If you want Loois then spell it Lewis (I also like this but hate it when people pronounce Louis as Lewis - Louis is the French way, use Lewis of you want the English)

No idea why I get my knickers in a twist about this as I don't have any Louis/Lewis in my family!

Nagoo · 18/03/2012 13:09

I love Lewis, but bit meh about Louis, because of the Louis XIV pronunciation issue.
