What do you think of Louis as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

poppydaisy: just to confuse matters, I once knew someone from St Louis and she told me the correct pronunciation is St Loo-is but it's affectionately known as St Loo-ie. Confused

poppydaisy · 25/03/2012 22:40

"Lewis is a remote island in the north of Scotland. To me it's not a name."

Lewis is as much an (English) name as Louis is a French one. Just because Lewis happens to be the name of an island as well doesn't make it less of a name. And don't forget St Louis in Missouri (pronounced St Loo-is by the way).

gwendolinefairfax · 25/03/2012 19:49

I love LOUIS ! My ds1's name. Lewis is a remote island in the north of Scotland where they make tweed. To me it's not a name.

SodoffBaldrick · 23/03/2012 01:09

Great name. Spell it Louis, though.

deste · 22/03/2012 23:17

My father was born in a NE Scotland fishing town and his name is Louis/ Lou- ee, which is what my mother and his friends called him. I was at his sisters funeral and they were calling him Lewis which I found very strange.

othersideofchannel · 21/03/2012 12:35

Even if the French pronunciation of Louis is Loo-ie, a lot of non-French speakers will pronounce it Loo-is. Personally, I'd spell it Louie outside of France if I wanted it pronounced that way. In Spain, for example, it is Luis, pronounced Loo-is and in Germany, Louis, also pronounced with an s.

Letchladee · 21/03/2012 12:03

I love it as a name too. I know one little Louis, so I wouldn't say it is popular.

Agree too that Louis is Lou-ee

If want Lou - is, then choose Lewis.

I much prefer Louis to Lewis though Grin.

essexmumma · 20/03/2012 21:00

Love it!! Was my top name for a boy but we are girls galore hereGrin

ludog · 20/03/2012 20:54

LOL, no...I have four more brothers but none of them are Daniel!

TinkerMaloo · 20/03/2012 12:53

ludog I have been thinking more and more about it since I posted that the other day and I think I might have to re-suggest to DP it as I do love it.. You dont have another brother called Daniel do you? That would be freaky lol ;)

ludog · 19/03/2012 20:58

Tinker I am Marianne and I have a brother Louis (Loo-ie)! (We are Irish, not French btw).

rachel234 · 19/03/2012 19:27

Have a look at the statistics to see if it is rising up the charts - it feels like it is becoming more popular. I know a 7 year old and a 3 year old Louis (both pronounced Lou-is).

DonInKillerHeels · 19/03/2012 19:27

Yes. Very common, at least where I live.

nightowlmostly · 19/03/2012 19:23

Is it really a common name these days? Part of the attraction for me is that it seems quite unusual, that sucks if it's not!

surroundedbyblondes · 19/03/2012 19:22

Love it! Pronounced Loo-ie. Would have been on our list of boy's names, but we already had an Ella and thought it might have looked like a 'jazz theme' was motivating our naming choices.

DonInKillerHeels · 19/03/2012 19:20

Vair vair popular round these ways; I know four under 18 months. Not a good option if you want something a bit different.

nightowlmostly · 19/03/2012 19:17

This is our top name as well, with only 4 weeks to go! The trouble is, our last name is Hamilton and I worry that people will pronounce it wrong as lewis. Not a F1 fan!

The correct pronunciation is Loo-ie, it's French! I have thought about calling him Louie, to stop any confusion, but it just doesn't seem as nice and reminds me of Louie Spence...

TinkerMaloo · 19/03/2012 09:05

love it lots! :) it was going to be my boy name, but we already have a marianne and we arent french so we decided against it :(

allagory · 18/03/2012 22:19

I love it.. But I think Louis Pasteur..Louis Armstrong..Louis Theroux before you think Louis walsh

rachel234 · 18/03/2012 22:13

I like it pronounced Lou-is. It is my (German) nephew's name.

I'm less keen on the French pronunciation.

evamummy · 18/03/2012 19:46

I don't like Louis, I'm afraid. I too hear 'loo' in the name.

The Louis I know goes by Lou-is, the English way, although the French pronunciation (Lou-ee) seems to be becoming more 'trendy' it appears, perhaps due to Lou-ee Walsh (whom I don't like either, I'm afraid).

Spelling it Louie would be a more helpful English spelling if you didn't like the s.

CherryBlossom27 · 18/03/2012 19:09

I love this name :)

Agree that it should be pronounced Loo-ee, otherwise I'd spell it as Lewis as in Loo-is.

DH chose Lewis for DS's name which I was really happy with and thought of Lennox Lewis :)

chocolateshoes · 18/03/2012 19:03

i love Louis (poronounced French). But my friend has a son and he complains that some people always pronounce it the wrong way and every year he has a new teacher he has to explain. Mind you he is 17 now and I think you hear it a lot more so there should be less confusion. I teach a lot of Lewis and also Louis (both pronounciations).

anglonubian · 18/03/2012 18:56

I love it and may well be naming my son it. I've only ever known it to be pronounced Lou-ee. Lewis is a different name, it's a surname isn't it?!

I found out the other day that Louis Walsh's real name is in fact Michael!

mayanna123 · 18/03/2012 17:28

Actually I had never made the loo association but yes, the French way does sound like Loo-y Grin
