I'm pregnant with my first child, a girl. Husband and I have come up with some names we both like, but we're not completely set on them. We're looking for a good English name, uncommon but not unheard of, that's not hard to spell or understand. Middle names will be Rose Loveday.

Short list;

Cordelia
Jemima
Clementine

I would love it if you could come up with some other suggestions, and thoughts on these would be appreciated!

Alligatorpie · 18/03/2012 17:11

I love Clementine.

luckylulu · 18/03/2012 16:37

I will consider Mercy. Only problem it is close to Marcy, which I detest.
showmethehappyfeet I love your statement about Cordelia/beautiful people! I'll try out Cordy, a bit. Clementine just seems fun, and not too flouncy.

Definitely Cordelia! Lovely shortened to Cordy too. It always strikes me as a name for beautiful people!
Clementine - I just don't get it. It seems huge on MN but I don't like it at all. Banana maybe?Wink
Jemima Puddleduck is all I think of with Jemima.

Italiangreyhound · 17/03/2012 01:14

Cordelia
Camille/Camilla
Thea
Grace

Congratulations

PercyFilth · 16/03/2012 23:58

May I propose a lovely "virtue" name that, unlike Grace, is rarely heard.

Mercy
good English name - check
uncommon but not unheard of - check
not hard to spell or understand - check

Mercy Rose Loveday

FilterCoffee · 16/03/2012 23:11

Clementine, Violet, Lydia and Rowena are all lovely :)

jessica1986 · 16/03/2012 22:00

my little girl's name is Thea (not like Tia but pronouncing the H) my second choice was Amelie which I still think is beautiful but Thea was always my first. It's a name which I think suits all ages. Also Isla is lovely.

Thea
Amelie
Isla
Poppy
Emily

MoonHare · 16/03/2012 16:58

I like Cordelia and Jemima but Clementine not so much and it would make for a long name to fit on the line on forms since she will have two other (very lovely btw middle names).

From other's suggestions I like Tabitha very much but am biased. And also like; Miranda, Beatrice and Florence.

Sensing a slight Shakespearean lean how about Rosalind?

May I also suggest Eleanor and Ursula?

LondonNadiy · 16/03/2012 16:47

I love Cordelia. Not Clementine - its so overused nowadays and Clemmy just sounds so much like 'Clammy'!

Tabitha
Emmeline
Hermionie
Helena
Georgiana
Violet (but too flowery with Rose?)
Elizabeth
Annabell
Marianne

saffronwblue · 16/03/2012 05:05

Last word on this - meant to be working from home today!

Mabel
Hetty

saffronwblue · 16/03/2012 03:11

Vanessa? Thomasina? Philippa? Pamela?

saffronwblue · 16/03/2012 02:13

I love Loveday! In the book A Little White Horse by Elizabeth Gouge there is a character called Loveday Minette.

Clementine is my favourite of your original three. Also like Violet and Tabitha.
Have you considered Celia? ( my DD). Or Silvia?

luckylulu · 16/03/2012 01:30

My favorites are Violet, Lydia, Rowena, Hermione and Tabitha! I will run these by hubby...any more suggestions welcome! :)

I love all those names, in a similar vein:
Lydia
Tabitha
Grace
Antonia

StealthNinja · 15/03/2012 22:54

Louisa
Josephine
Anna
Juliet

LaDiDaDi · 15/03/2012 21:03

Love Cordelia, like Jemima and not keen on Clementine (really don't like Clem or Clemmy as nn).

Clara
Beatrice
Susannah
Edith
Agatha
Felicity

MadameChinLegs · 15/03/2012 21:01

As soon as I wrote it I though "hmmmm.......might have to have another girl"

I do hope the OP tells us what she eventually calls her DD. Even if it's nothing on here. I don't like it when you never find out and a year later think "I wonder what they chose"?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/03/2012 20:58

Love Hermione.

Marianne
Gwendolyn
Violet
Isolde
Yolanda
Lydia
Clover

LucyFarinelli · 15/03/2012 20:56

Tabitha Rose Loveday is FAB!!! Good call Madame

MadameChinLegs · 15/03/2012 20:52

Cordelia - Nope
Jemima - Love!
Clementine - like, but not wowed by.

Just a few to chuck into the mix:
Dorothy Rose Loveday
Florence Roase Loveday
Tabitha Rose Loveday (my favourite)
Hermione Rose Loveday
Beatrice Rose Loveday

All in a similar style to OPs choices

nalubeadsgirl · 15/03/2012 20:45

LOL. OP did ask for names that are 'not hard to spell'
I'm a primary school teacher.

Please. Just call your child Amy !!! ;)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/03/2012 20:37

How on earth can a name that has existed for centuries be pretentious fgs - unless it's something like Prince Michael or King James? Was just trying to give names in a similar vein to those in the OP. I hate the name Portia for example but thought if the OP likes Cordelia then she may like it. Hmm

LucyFarinelli · 15/03/2012 20:26

Congrats to you and your DH.
I'm not struck on any of these TBH, but Cordelia is the one out of these i would choose.
Other suggestions:

Camille/Camilla
Eloise
Julianna
Rowena
Winona
