I actually said it was an animal name not just dogs. My dc are VERY good at pointing out all the animals that share my name!

Puremince · 16/03/2012 18:49

dog, not dof!

Puremince · 16/03/2012 18:48

insanityscratching, mnistooaddictive said that Lucy is a dog's name, but I say, what's wrong with that? Though we were a bit Hmm when Blue Peter named their dof Lucy weeks after we had our Lucy.

LondonNadiy · 16/03/2012 17:52

I only know one Lucy and she was awesome - I love Lucy as a name but I could never use it now - not because she 'ruined' it but cos she is Lucy and no one else is, iyswim. Lots of Juicy-Lucy nn, but she started most of them so... We often called her Luce, but as in 'Luce' not Loose - never thought of it at 'Loose' before!

I love Amber too - don't know if its cos I wasn't around in the 80s that I don't know why its 80's?.

I think go for Lucy - its gorgeous and timeless and her dad loves it too! What about mn? Lucy Amber?

Don't go for Alfie, every teen mum has called their boy Alfie, its common in both senses imo.

Jack, Mark, Zach, Tom, Sam, Julian, Max, Josh/ua, Stefan, Matthew for boys (in the same vein as Lucy/Amber IMO)

thegreylady · 16/03/2012 16:41

only know one child called Lucy she is 5 now and a nicer little girl you couldn't hope to meet. I love the name.

insanityscratching · 16/03/2012 16:39

*puremince" never realised two of mine had dog's names Blush and I don't even like dogs Grin

Puremince · 16/03/2012 16:24

We have a Lucy. You can't go wrong with Lucy. It's not mega-popular, but it's not weird either. It won't date, like the current crop of trendy names- there are Lucys of all ages. There are a lot of dogs called Lucy, but that's true of other names, too. (How many dogs are called "Ben" for instance?) It means "light" which is good meaning. It's international. It's easy to spell. Go for it!

zozzle · 15/03/2012 20:48

Forgot to add - Amber is ok ish but not keen.

ovenchips · 15/03/2012 20:47

Lucy is lovely. IMO Lucie is even nicer. And makes me think of Mabel Lucie Attwell.

zozzle · 15/03/2012 20:47

Prefer Molly - but getting quite popular.

Lucy - far too girly and boring for my tastes (in same vein as Emily - which I'm also not keen on). But fits in well with current crop of girly names that are popular.

Whatevertheweather · 15/03/2012 20:45

I am a Lucy - I've always liked it, I don't think it's overly popular although dd's friends mum has just named her new baby Lucy. Never had any 'loose' nicknames/teasing. Whoever said Amber is 80's that's what popped in to my head too Smile Molly is a bit twee.

Psammead · 15/03/2012 20:44

We pronounce ours 'Loo SEE Ah'. Which I think is South American. You can also say LOOsha or LUcha. Smile

LemonTurd · 15/03/2012 20:41

I suggested Lucia upthread as I know an Italian Lucia, pron. loo-CHE-ah.

I love it! Smile

Psammead · 15/03/2012 20:39

We have a Lucia, who we call Lucy. I like that it's versatile like that. Lucy is nice but Lucia is a bit more interesting, imo.

MadameChinLegs · 15/03/2012 19:37

Lovely.

If you want to quirk it up, what about Lucille or Lucinda?

PortHills · 15/03/2012 19:27

Grin óops

PortHills · 15/03/2012 19:26

I have a Lucie... named after a friend (Lucy in French). In my head, the ie makes the name sound a bit softer, even though it sounds exactly the same :0

Nectar · 15/03/2012 19:25

I love the name Lucy, I know a little Lucy at our nursery but it's spelt LUCIE. I do like that spelling, but wonder whether the child will have a lifetime of spelling out her name!

BackforGood · 15/03/2012 19:25

Tends to get shortened to "Loose" (which I know is more letters, but less sounds when you are speaking!)

...... which then leads to all the
loose woman,
loose elastic,
loose morals,
screw loose.... etc.

exoticfruits · 15/03/2012 19:19

If boring = classic I adore boring!
I agree that Alfie is very popular.

mnistooaddictive · 15/03/2012 11:53

Alfie is VERY popular around here. Deliberately misspelling names to make them 'unusual' is bad. It makes it look like you are trying too hard.

telsa · 15/03/2012 09:00

Lucy is such a pretty name - I am always well disposed towards Lucys for some reason - they are always pretty and bright! Don't know any little ones of that name. Definitely not boring.

welovesausagedogs · 15/03/2012 08:51

Lucy is very boring, there are 3 Lucy's in DS nursery class, and 2 in DD's music class - it's too popular.

Love Amber but have you though of using the other spelling Amba - much more unusual.

Alfie as a name is nice - don't think it is too common, i haven't ever met an Alfie.

What about Oscar, Finn, Harry, Felix, Joseph, Joshua, Freddie, Charlie, Jamie, Archie.

Debs75 · 15/03/2012 08:48

I have a Lucy as well. I gave DP a list of 4 names which were my favourites, Lucy, Katie, Freya, Pippa and he picked Lucy. It doesnt go with the other dc's as their names could be girl or boy names and I was surprised DP picked it as he doesn't like girly names. I love it though, girly but not flowery and short and sweet

LucyManga · 15/03/2012 08:47

Lucy is dull.

I love Lucille, though.
