What do you think of the name Hudson for a boy?

Awful, really, really awful. And so is Hadleigh - twatty and pretentious.

Badgerina · 01/05/2012 17:06

I think/feel the same thing I always think/feel when I hear this sort of name (place name or surname-as-first-name) - that it lacks "life". However, that also means it is quite a blank canvas which can be a good thing.

mayanna123 · 01/05/2012 14:25

I've not met anyone named Hudson but I actually quite like it. Those who say it reminds them of the Hudson River: lots of names are also used to name places e.g. Florence, Brooklyn, etc, and I don't think that is a big deal (or a negative association).

bigbluebump · 01/05/2012 12:29

I think it is fine: Masculine sounding, classic, easy to spell/pronounce and not overused. What's not to like?

As most people don't know a real-life Hudson, they can only go on their previous associations, but as soon as they meet your ds (if you decide to name him Hudson), then they'll associate the name with him. And he probably won't have to share his name with many others - an added bonus Smile.

I'm not usually keen on those more unusual names. And I also thought of Hudson the butler. But there's nothing wrong with it. Don't knowhow common it is. Never heard of it used as a Christian name.

bruffin · 01/05/2012 09:13

First thought Hudson the Butler

Also don't like surnames as christian names.

Any new opinions on Hudson? It is top of our list at the moment...

I don't love it tbh. It is a surname and reminds me of a name a US celebrity would give their child.

ED1984 · 16/03/2012 05:14

Thanks everyone - anyone else want to add their opinion?

Son of Hud

FilterCoffee · 12/03/2012 23:24

Of the two, I prefer Hudson to Monty.

Limelight · 12/03/2012 23:05

My cousin's dog is called Hudson. Nice dog though!

Not sure that's helpful

TheMerchantOfVenom · 12/03/2012 23:02

I don't like it - it conjures up a built-like-a-brick-outhouse, beer-swilling Southern redneck - but, people do become their names and if I knew one, he'd probably come to 'own' the name and over time I'd cease to be reminded of said redneck.

ilovemybum · 12/03/2012 22:11

I know a man with the surname Hudson Hmm

WetAugust · 12/03/2012 21:23

Rock Hudson was a very famous 1950's fim star (heart throb) who died of AIDS.

LondonNadiy · 12/03/2012 16:39

Nice, but makes me think 'Will he fly planes'? (Plane in river) Don't like the nn potential there much either! But I prefer it to Monty.

shoobidoo · 12/03/2012 15:38

I like Hudson. It sounds masculine, cool and isn't overused as so many are these days. People are much more likely to remember a Hudson. Great choice imo!

FriendofDorothy · 12/03/2012 15:38

My nephew is Barnabas Hudson and I love it. I wish they had chosen Hudson as his first name!

MardyBra · 12/03/2012 15:11

MN 2030: AIBU to call my baby Carson?

Then all you young'uns will be saying "No it's a butler's name ffs.". Grin

Clawdy · 12/03/2012 14:58

Sorry,Hudson will be forever a kind, slightly unctuous butler....and the Upstairs Downstairs theme comes into my head.....

Showmethemhappyfeet · 12/03/2012 14:01

Love it! And Hadleigh, but thought that was a girls name. I wanted Hudson on the list if Dd has been a DS but I no a dig called Hudson. If loads of people I know didn't know the dog I still would have used it!

FlirtyThirty · 12/03/2012 13:57

It's a river.

Tigresswoods · 12/03/2012 11:13

Wanted to call DS Hudson but DH didn't like it. Would have shortened to "Sonny" which I think is soooo cool.

Kveta · 12/03/2012 11:12

it's a river, surely?

I prefer Monty.

Thefourcees · 12/03/2012 11:11

It does sound like a surname, but then so do a lot of names nowadays, although its more unusual than say Riley,Kennedy,Mason or Morgan. I actually quite like it.
