Well, title says it all really. DS is 10 weeks old and is a handsome smilng chap already so gets alot of attention. My parents hate his name but are sort of used to it...my other DC's love the name but its HVs and shop keepers and friends and friends of friends that usually just eh and then oh.

I wasnt bothered at first but now its starting to get to me. I do love the name but am a bit embarrassed now.

Would these sort of things make you change the name??? I'm thinking of changing it to Edward (Ted).

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
GinPalace · 04/03/2012 15:52

Right... twoimmatureturtledoves you are clearly the person to ask.....

How is this actually held on?

merkin

Bunbaker · 04/03/2012 15:52

It's a pretty pointless thread if you won't tell us what the name is. If it means outing you, then it must be a somewhat remarkable name.

As the owner of an unusual name myself I feel sorry for your son if his name gets that kind of response. While I wasn't laughed at I did spend my childhood wishing that I had a less unusual name.

SparkySparrow · 04/03/2012 15:44

Munt

Now that would be bad!

dragon butter

GinPalace · 04/03/2012 15:41

twoimmatureturtledoves is on my dirty level wavelength maybe I should consult her for name suggestions

EdithWeston · 04/03/2012 15:41

'"its HVs and shop keepers and friends and friends of friends that usually just eh and then oh". Is it Tinky Winky?!'

Probably Taio or Cruz?

GinPalace · 04/03/2012 15:39

There was actually a serious discussion in my house the other day that maybe my current bump should be Merlin if it was a boy! Blush

But given my own rotten humour should probably be put down to hormones and too much easy-watching saturday eve telly! Grin

GinPalace · 04/03/2012 15:37

tooblunt you are right it would be a great name! I have just watched too much eurotrash in my mis-spent yoof.

RitaMorgan · 04/03/2012 15:37

Every name on the shortlist is a real name, and reasonably popular - so can't imagine any of them are laughable?

I know under 5s called Xavier, Xavian, Elijah, Eli and Elias so neither of those are outlandish.

Tooblunt2012 · 04/03/2012 15:34

GinPalace, your Merkin made me think of the Merlin's I'd heard, but I'd never heard of Merkin.
Then I clicked on your link to see what the joke was - haha!! Think I've led a v sheltered life & Merkin would be a great name GrinGrin

browneyesblue · 04/03/2012 15:34

If it's Xavier, then I don't see anything strange or funny about the name. I have an uncle and a cousin with the name, and they've never had any comments about it. They both pronounce it HAV-ier.

Even if that's not the name, unless you've chosen a name like Merkin Hmm it's pretty rude of people to laugh.

FaithHopeAndKevin · 04/03/2012 15:32

Is it Roland?

Notalone · 04/03/2012 15:31

To be fair its the name that probably outs you Katefromkidderminster. Not exactly the most anonymous of user names hey?! Smile

LizzieChickens · 04/03/2012 15:30

Is it Pickledypoohead?

SparkySparrow · 04/03/2012 15:30

susie I'm curious to where you are, my neck of the woods would also pronounce it Arferrr! Grin

Elijah is a nice name. The first thing that springs to mind though is a hobbit! bUt its a lovely name.

OP WHERE ARE YOU???? CONFIRM THE NAME

GinPalace · 04/03/2012 15:29

tooblunt2012 sorry your merlin comment may not have anything to do with my merkin suggestion!

merkin

'twas my idea of a joke. Grin

fabwoman · 04/03/2012 15:26

Out you?
Come off it, just name change afterwards.

Notalone · 04/03/2012 15:24

Oh god, I hate threads like this and have just wasted more time I will not get back on reading it.

OP - I don't think I like my DS's name. Should I change it?

Everyone - Oooh. Well in order to help you decide we need to know his name, otherwise we won't be able to tell you if his name should be changed.

OP - I couldn't possibly tell you that.

Everyone - I think his name must be Rudolph, Rambunctious, Rumplestiltskin etc etc

OP -

Everyone -

Notalone -

susiedaisy · 04/03/2012 15:22

The name Arthur on itself is fine, it's the fact that not many people under the age of 80 are called it, bit like calling a baby girl Mildred, anyway in my neck of the woods it would be pronounced Arfer!Grin

Stuntnun · 04/03/2012 15:20

As a sufferer of an unusual name myself (no it's not really Stuntnun) there are two considerations, a pro and a con:

CON - Every time he meets someone he will have to explain his name to them and/or they will comment on it. This gets very wearing after a while. No one asks for an explanation or feels the need to regale you on your name's meaning if you have a 'not unusual' name.

PRO - Everyone will always remember his name because it will have made an impact on them/they will have had to ask for the spelling/they will have had a conversation about his name. I'm particularly terrible at remembering peoples' names but they always remember mine!

BettyPerske · 04/03/2012 15:20

Hmmm...I wanted to change ds2's name after silent responses from well, nearly everyone.

However he is 4 now and refuses to countenance changing it though I have offered...it is him, he is it, he has even named his favourite toy after himself.

I think we are stuck with it. I mean it's a good name and all...I just didn't want him to suffer.

Edward is nice though.
