How about Onyx, not so much nature but its a gemstone and unusual.

Honestly- imagine yourself a scared, shy, glasses and brace wearing 11 year old who either hasn't had his growth spurt yet or who has and everyone else hasn't. Now imagine yourself having to give your name about 50 times on your first day at secondary school.and it's one of the names suggested here.

Now imagine yourself as a young manager trying to impose you authority over a team of bolshy older people. And you have to tell them your name's Sage. Or Tarka. Or Florian.

nightswimmer · 05/03/2012 06:28

Tarka, the water wanderer
the name given to otters in ancient times (I know a boy and a girl by this name)

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 05/03/2012 06:11

Keep with real names

Cedric (cedar)
Philip (love horses)
Sylvain (from the forrest)
Yvon (yew)
Florian
Florimon
Florentin
Wolf-gang -frik
Oliver
Ash
Laurent
Marin (from the sea)
Leo
Erwan (yew)
Pierre (stone)
Ariel (lion of god) Ari (lion)
Bjorn (bear)
Basil
Bertram (famous raven)
Guido (forrest)
Jasper
Leonard

A lot of japanese, sanskrit and hebrew names are related to nature (I am sure some other cultures as well, native american? old norse? Thor (thumder))

Isn't Roan also a colour, as in a reddy shade, used to describe cattle. O grade Biology coming back to haunt me there I think. It was pronounced ro as in row a boat but the end as in 'own' so 'rown' iykwim!

Kellywestie · 04/03/2012 17:49

A friend of our DS is Roan which I think may be the Welsh spelling of Rowan.

My 2 favourites would be Bay and Leif.

Oakley

SleepyFergus · 04/03/2012 17:41

Im also aware of a couple of girls here in Scotland who are Rowan as in argument also.

SleepyFergus · 04/03/2012 17:39

Seeker - well the little Rowan lad I know lives in Perthshire. And his parents would make sure it was correct!
