Think I'll do this for every month, quite fun for me to see the patterns and the slightly silly names, plus it assures me each month that no one has the name I have picked out for DC1 due in the summer Grin

Last month the girls definitely had the more "oddball" names but there weren't too many crazy offerings. This month is a different story!!

Tally of # girls vs. boys

January - 70 girls, 58 boys
Feburary - 51 girls, 67 boys

I have starred my particular "wowza" favorites Wink

Livingston Shock i suppose you could call her livie, i love Tatum though :)

Yes, the US racing driver, along with US actresses, do not appear to be using the European pronunciation.

Just as there are many people who have a Xavier and pronounce the 'X' as in Eksavier, you can pronounce a name as you like. But when you are making a new change, especially when 'importing' an established name then going by sight not sound, it's going to sound all wrong to the original users, in this case Europeans.

I suppose it is similar to the puzzlement I would feel if say the name James were pronounced "Jam-ess".

Ample · 06/03/2012 02:18

The actress from The Wonder Years (and The West Wing) is called Danica. Only time I have ever heard the name.

Ample · 06/03/2012 02:14

I get why Abilene could be popular (The Help?)
But the spelling of Mollee? Awful.

mathanxiety · 06/03/2012 02:04

There is a race driver named Danica Patrick (pr Dannicka).

Fishpond · 05/03/2012 17:59

Grin I was particularly wowed at Atreyu. Sad thing is, all the kids in his class will be like "what is the never-ending story? Your mom made your name up." Sad, really.

I suppose pronouncing Danica as Danika is the same sight-driven approach as gives us variations like Eksavier for Xavier.

PersonalClown · 04/03/2012 21:08

I was thinking 'Cool!' Someone named their child after a great Rock/metal band.
Then I remembered that the band called themselves after The Never Ending Story. Blush

CointreauVersial · 04/03/2012 21:03

The Danica I know is a "Dann-nick-a" as well.

Rhubarbgarden · 04/03/2012 20:53

Interesting that Danica is Slavic. Makes sense - I know a Slavic Manica and she pronounces it like that. My cousin's little girl however, is pronounced 'Dannicka' Hmm.

Fishpond · 04/03/2012 19:19

Lula I'm fairly sure it's ka-MY-ruh. I've heard it before so it wasn't starred :-/

And Braylon / Braylen / Brayden = very common. Haven't seen the Braylon spelling before but it's certainly in the same vein.

OP posts:
ScatterChasse · 04/03/2012 19:11

Are there many Braylons OP or is that quite unusual? It sounds like a brand name to my ears!

LulaBear · 04/03/2012 18:33

I'm shocked that little "kamyra" didn't even get a *. Would that be pronounced like camera or chimera?? Wow.

Fishpond · 04/03/2012 17:52

Oh - and there are tons of Aubrey's here in the US - I don't know any who are boys. I think people use it as an alternative to the older style Audrey. But the US is the playground for naming girls with traditional boys names - after all, there was a female Elijah last month.

Fishpond · 04/03/2012 17:50

To be honest, the name I'm planing to use I would never dream of using in the UK - the accent makes it sound like a completely different word - a noun, even - whereas now that I'm firmly established back here it's quite a tame offering compared to some! (Don't worry, I'll include DS's name whatever it may be on the July list!)

EdithWeston · 04/03/2012 17:31

Aubrey is a boys name in Europe: it's a variant of Oberon/Auberon, King of the Fairies.

DameFlatYouLent · 04/03/2012 17:30

Atreyu! Grin How will he ever live that one down?

5inthebed · 04/03/2012 17:28

Isn't Aubrey a boys name?

And again with the Brentley? Obviously a popular name. Lots of little Brentleys in the same class in a few years time.

swooosh · 04/03/2012 17:23

I actually quite like Aubrey, Paisley and Peyton Blush

WhispersOfWickedness · 04/03/2012 17:21

Wow, thank you for doing this, really interesting Smile I will look out for it again next month Grin

mybootsaremuddy · 04/03/2012 17:19

Thank you fishpond. I have seen both the Dec and Jan lists you put up and it still amazes me what names some of thes poor children have been saddled with. But there are also some lovely names in the lists also.

I know that here in uk there are some Hmm names about but the Americans seem to make a hobby out of strange/unusual names. Im from NZ and there are some pretty weard names there but again id say that the americans win, for sure!

EdithWeston · 04/03/2012 17:12

Danica is a fairly common Slav name, pronounced Dan-ee-tsar.

TheMonster · 04/03/2012 17:04

Braxton Shock

StateofConfusion · 04/03/2012 17:01

At my brothers nursery school in england there's one family with a Jayden and a Coalby.

I also know of a Kylan and Leyland, all english people.

Fwiw, I think some of the above are nice names, just ruined by the type of people who screech them in public in my neck of the woods.

BackforGood · 04/03/2012 17:00

Wow!
What else is there to say? Grin

Thanks for taking the time to type all those out!
