Came across a name today that I'd never heard before and I think I've fallen for it!

It's Ayelet.

What do you think? Would probably pronounce it Eye-leht. So I suppose it'd be like a mixture of Isla and Violet. I think it is very pretty and unique without being too unusual, but would love some opinions please and thank you! x

I love it, it was a real contender for DC4's middle name (that or Serah) if he's been a girl. My DDs have 3 syllable, stress in the middle, Hebrew names also as their middle names: Salome, Bithiah, Davidyah.

Hebrew origin names tend to have the emphasis on the last or next to last syllable so if you like that sound there are plenty of others that fit.

vitaminC · 04/03/2012 11:35

It's a diminutive of Ayala, which is the Hebrew word for a (female) deer, and also a girls' name. Ayal is the male version.

I know a few Ayalas and have come across a couple of Ayelets, but all were Israeli or orthodox Sephardi Jews.

Not sure either name really works in English, to be honest - although I do like the way they sound in Hebrew.

pixiestix · 04/03/2012 11:20

I don't like it in any way. Sorry.

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/03/2012 08:10

Yes, three syllables, stress on the middle syllable.

It would be odd if you are not Jewish or Israeli as the names you have mentioned (Naomi, Rachel) are biblical names. I am not sure, but I think Ayelet falls more into the "modern Hebrew" names - like, as I have mentioned, Hagit, Sigalit, Ilit, Tal etc. I'll say now that I am not religious - these may well be biblical names too! But if they are, they don't fall into "mainstream biblical" and the only girls I've known with these names have been Israeli. (Lived in Israel for a bit in the 1990s.)

Tortington · 04/03/2012 01:36

ridiculous

OrenIshi · 04/03/2012 01:29

Somehow it reminds me of cygnet.

mrudagawa · 04/03/2012 01:22

No looks ugly and sounds odd.

KikiRC · 04/03/2012 01:15

There was an Ayelet when I was at school- pronounced Ay-yelle-et. Yes, Jewish/ Israeli.

nizlopi · 03/03/2012 23:00

It really should put you off. You shouldn't burden your child with a name that stupid.

Cewafwb · 03/03/2012 21:51

Well I feel much better and am still laughing - thanks for that! Hilarious postings from all.

Bluestocking · 03/03/2012 20:54

I don't like it much, but I think that might be because the Ayelet I know of is the write Ayelet Waldman, who I have never been able to tolerate after her 2005 piece in the New York Times about how she loves her husband more than her four children.

Kindling · 03/03/2012 20:32

With the same names smooshed, how about Viola?

SayBoo · 03/03/2012 18:37

Awful!

therewasalittlegirl · 03/03/2012 17:43

Thanks sock, I'm going to Google Alette!

So is it like Violet, if Violet were to be pronounced with 3 syllables? A bit like how Beatrice can be 3 but blends into 2? Or am I just confusing things?

I know a woman named Ayelet, who is Israeli. She puts a very slight stress on the first syllable, so AY-el-et. I used to pronounce her name "EYE-lit" until she corrected me.

I like it.

It has almost the same stresses as the French name Elodie.

Sockspence · 03/03/2012 15:37

there is a pretty French name like this, I think it's Alette (sp?)

I think the accent falls on the last syllable but I'm not certain. (I know the name from seeing it written but I don't know anyone called that.) Other posters have said the first or the middle. Make sure you know this for sure before you use it.

countessbabycham · 03/03/2012 08:43

I like it but only when spoken with 3 even syllables, and I think people would soon be able to manage that after the first time.

ripsishere · 03/03/2012 08:37

Name of DDs friend.
I-el-let. Lovely name, lovely girl. She is Israeli though. Not sure I'd want to call a child of mine something that is clearly a race/country specific name if I didn't belong to either.
It is a gorgeous name.

TeddingtonsMarchingBand · 03/03/2012 08:23

Other names with stress on the middle syllable as you asked OP:
Susanna
Jemima
Serena
Can't think of any that don't end in a.

SilentBoob · 03/03/2012 03:30

at CaoNiMa.

CaoNiMa · 03/03/2012 03:23

As in Ayelet Walden, the novelist?

It's a beautiful name.

I hate when all the dense Netmums transplants on here veto a name just because it looks or sounds "funny" or "forrin". Ayelet is a gorgeous Hebrew name.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 02/03/2012 23:02

Sorry - but it's really not good. I think you should blame your hormones and step away from the name before you do something you will might regret!
