I was trying to explain Carrie (the film) to DD and I was struck by the names the leads had - Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

Any takers for:

Sissy
Piper
Tuesday
Goldie
Hedy
Cid
Marilyn

Piper is still in use in the USA.

I like Piper, Tuesday and Hedy.
Sissy and Goldie sound kind of cute but more like pet's names.
Cid and Marilyn I dislike.

LineRunner · 27/02/2012 20:25

Yes, I recall Goldie being a Blue Peter dog.

They're no worse than some of the names of actresses today;

Rooney (Mara)
Kiernan (Shipka)
Meryl (Streep)
Uma (Thurman)
Famke (Jansson)
Zooey (Deschanel)
Sigourney (Weaver)

I quite like Piper and I like the sound of Sissy (but not the meaning)

FilterCoffee · 27/02/2012 21:11

Marilyn is the only nice name in the OP.

i'm trying to pursuade DP to go with Tuesday, because i love it, he does too but doesn't want DD to get bullied, i don't think she will it's rather tame compared to some of the names i've encountered recently.

Happenstance · 28/02/2012 08:11

oh and out of interest Hedy is short for Hedwig, i can see why she shortened it :o

alessthandomesticgoddess · 28/02/2012 08:34

Piper is my favourite.

telsa · 28/02/2012 08:44

Shock Happenstance

bruffin · 28/02/2012 12:02

Telsa you forgot Grace

LineRunner · 28/02/2012 12:49

Was Tippi short for anything?

She was great in The Birds. I knew they'd have her hair-do in the end.

Tippi was born Natalie. Tippi was a nickname her father gave her when she was little.

Happenstance · 28/02/2012 14:07

Oh dear NO sorry Hedwig Blush, if it gets me off the hook in real life my name is a greek slang word for a BJ

squoosh · 28/02/2012 15:40

Can I just say that I think Rooney is the Worst Name Ever (tm) for a girl.

Everytime I see that beautiful actress I always, always think 'what an ugly name you were lumbered with'. I know it doesn't have the same connotations in America (I'm referring to Wayne obv) but it's just not a pretty sound.

I suppose it follows in that trend of Americans giving Irish surnames as first names. Reilly, Kennedy, Rafferty, Cassidy, Logan, Cody, Brady, Flynn, Quinn etc. etc. but eeeek she got the crappy end of the stick with Rooney.

Plus I believe she comes for quite a moneyed background so they must have thought it sounds classy. My mind is boggling.

LineRunner · 28/02/2012 16:46

I was going to say I like Natalie, and I like Cassidy, but then I put them together and the screaming started......

Meryl is a great name

squoosh · 29/02/2012 14:27

What about Merle, as in Merle Oberon? She gave a brilliant performance as Cathy to Laurence Olivier's Heathcliff.

Merle is v. elegant and v. underused.

LineRunner · 29/02/2012 18:38

I like both Meryl and Merle.

Anyone for:

Vera-Ellen
May
Ginger
Bette
Joan

(Sorry, telsa already did Joan!)
