What do you think? I love it but DH says he is not wild about it but will go with it if it's really what I've set my mind on... I'm worried this means he hates it! Arghhh. So AIBU or should I just take him at face value? I've said he can pick 2nd name ;-) we have 2 children already, one has Irish name (dh is Irish) and one non Irish. I am not keen for another irish name as think our middle child will feel left out and we are in UK.

We have 3 weeks till c section...

So I guess it's just short for Adelheid then, since Heide is short for Adelheid...

Pronunciation-wise, if you look up pronunciations of Adelheid, that seems to be pronounced with the ei as an 'eye' sound, so Heidi pronounced like that would make sense...

Bigteadrinker · 28/02/2012 15:45

Ei = eye, I guess? Anyway, it is Hi-dee. Why how would a German pronounce it?! Hay-dee? My friend in Germany may have a laugh then! I don't like Cara, I never know whether it should be car-rah or ca-ra IYSWIM. The theme tune does enter my head at times, but I don't mind, I have good memories of the tv programme from my childhood.

Heidelise is just a combination of Heide and Lise and not very well known imo.

IMcHunt · 28/02/2012 15:34

Zumm, it can be short for several names, including Adelheid (Adelaide but pronounced adel ide rather than adel ayd) and Heidelise.
It's a pretty name.

othersideofchannel · 28/02/2012 15:20

Also, how would you pronounce the -ei in English? Only asking as in German it is -aay, but my (english) dh always mixes up the -ei and -ie when trying to read a German word.

othersideofchannel · 28/02/2012 15:19

I don't like Heidi, I'm afraid. I'm German and it has very old fashioned, almost comical, association there. Don't think it is short for anything, it is an old German name.

Of your other choices I much prefer Cara - that is feminine, elegant, works well in all languages too.

CeliaDeBohun · 28/02/2012 14:02

Heidi is a beautiful name. Stick to your guns!

zumm · 28/02/2012 14:00

This is a lovely name. Anyone know if Heidi is short for anything??

jeee · 28/02/2012 11:16

It's a lovely name - but every time I hear it, the Heidi theme tune from my childhood starts playing in my head.

imnotmymum · 28/02/2012 11:14

love it !!

Anonymumous · 28/02/2012 11:13

I know a little girl called Heidi and she's adorable. I think it's a lovely name!

PercyFilth · 28/02/2012 11:03

I don't like it, it always makes me think of holes. Hidey-hole.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 28/02/2012 10:29

Underused gem! Yes, use it.

I knew a total bitch of a Cara Grin

cakegoblin · 28/02/2012 09:48

It was right at the top of my list for years - I absolutely love it. Girlie, light and pretty and I can almost smell fresh alpine air when I think about the book! DH vetoed it for the random reason that "it's a fit bird's name". But he has been shown to have unbelievably bad taste in names. sigh

ilovemybum · 26/02/2012 23:08

My cousin is Heidi and she's lovely. Its a beautiful name.

NotAnotherNewNappy · 26/02/2012 23:00

It's lovely, quite classic but underused. Heidi from sugababes is the only one I have ever heard of in real life. I am sure your DH will grow to love it.

welovesausagedogs · 26/02/2012 22:59

I think it's really pretty, i would go for it. As a compromise you could always let DH have more of a say with the middle name??

Bigteadrinker · 26/02/2012 22:48

Thanks footballfriendsays, it won't put me off. The only Heidi i know is very quirky and lovely, so thats the only association i will be keeping! I'm really pleased to see all the positive comments on here, not shared with anyone else in RL apart from DH.

Don't let the KK association put you off. I know that if anyone thinks I chose Heidi for my daughter because of KK they can't know me or be my friends so their opinion doesn't matter. It's a pretty name.

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 26/02/2012 18:07

Lovely name.

I went to school with two gorgeous blonde Heidis so it has quite glamorous connotations for me.

Ginger4justice · 26/02/2012 12:16

I think its lovely. I was just about to add it to my list for (hypothetical) DC2 but realised it sounds to close to DD's name. So definitely use it so I can live vicariously through you Grin

Bigteadrinker · 26/02/2012 12:13

Oh dear I am going to block out that association with kk, I didn't know!

Absolutley adore Heidi - it is a shame about the Kerry Katona connection, but never mind. Will be on my shortlist if we are ever blessed with another dd! x

scarletforya · 26/02/2012 12:05

I love this name.

insancerre · 26/02/2012 12:02

i really like it and don't understand why it isn't more popular.
