Im pretty new to MN but I LOVE looking at baby names. I love picking names for (imaginary) DC2. Since coming on here there are loads of names I've never heard of (and prob can't pronounce!)
So far...
Clementine
Persephone
Cecily
Seraphina
Are the ones that stick out. So, what names have MNetters introduced you to, and have you used them?

Asa

OP, had you never heard the song 'Oh My Darling Clementine'?

mathanxiety · 25/02/2012 18:22

Turquand thread.

MrsBovary · 25/02/2012 18:17

It was Turquand apparently, have just been reminded.

mathanxiety · 25/02/2012 16:50

Ptolemy is Toll-emmie (looks like something glandular to me too)
Inigo is In-iggo (short i sound)

CecilyP · 25/02/2012 13:28

Torquil is Scottish. It usually goes with the surname MacLeod. I once worked in medical records of a large hospital and there were loads of Torquil MacLeods - but no Torquils with other common Scottish surnames.

TuesdayNightClub · 25/02/2012 12:54

Inigo. How is it pronounced? In - I - Go? As in, "I see a enticing doorway so Inigo?" Confused

I do know a Torquil in real life and it has grown on me. Scandinavian I think.

Elodie, Leofric and loads of Irish names.

MrsBovary · 24/02/2012 19:58

No, it wasn't Tarquin. I'll have to try and search for it.

Yes, Persephone does seem to be mentioned on here a lot. Nice name, though.

PinkFondantFancy · 24/02/2012 19:54

People don't tend to mis-hear Persephone as Stephanie unless you rush it when you say it. I think it's a beautiful name.

I'd never heard of Elodie before but I think it's gorgeous.

BillyBollyBandy · 24/02/2012 19:52

Elodie
Ptolemy (as a name now rather than the name of a historical figure iykwim)

Dexy83 · 24/02/2012 19:50

Sorry - Persephone

Dexy83 · 24/02/2012 19:49

A friend wants to call her daughter Persophone (She pronounces it Per-sef-o-ney) and I have discouraged her as much as possible. I think the poor child would spend her entire life saying "My name is Persophone" and the person will say "Stephanie?"

I went to school with a Persephone, we were briefly close friends, so that one is pretty ordinary to me :).
Ottilie is definitely a bit out there, for me.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 24/02/2012 17:33

Oh yeah Ottilie is another one! And never realised how popular the 'old' names are till I came on here!

MrsWifty · 24/02/2012 17:10

Our family cat was called Persephone Blush.

Elodie for me. Quite like it, no way DH would ever go for it.

mathanxiety · 24/02/2012 17:07

Jolyon.

notso · 24/02/2012 16:48

Ottilie seems to be all over MN at the moment.

I've never heard of it and I don't like it

LadyInPink · 24/02/2012 16:43

MrsBovary Tarquin?

Persephone is the only one that stands out as never come across before until i joined mn.

I know a Clementine, Arlo, and a Seren plus Elodie but not the Irish names mentioned above.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 24/02/2012 16:38

Quite a cool story actually, just not my kind of name Grin

OP posts:
LizzieChickens · 24/02/2012 14:38

I'd never heard of Elodie, Seren, or many Gaelic names I probably cannot spell: Eilidh, Caiomhe, etc.

MrsBovary · 24/02/2012 13:50

What was the name from that old amusing thread? Torquil or Tarquand, something like that.

lynlynnicebutdim · 24/02/2012 13:30

Per-Sef-Ony

She was the daughter of Demeter and was kidnapped by Hades who married her. Demeter wouldnt allow spring to begin until Hades returned her daugther so Zues brokered a deal that let Persephone out of the underworld for 6 months of the year, at which time Demeter would let all the crops grow etc but when Persephone has to go back to Hades, Demeter gets nasty again and we have winter.
