Aibhinn (A veen),its a irish name for beautiful and we both love the sound of it for dd on the way,but are abit worried that people wont have a notion how to say it.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yes I could but, I am Irish and living in Ireland. I don't get this fascination with Irish names, we don't even love them that much ourselves :)

Beamur · 21/02/2012 14:05

No idea if you hadn't said, but don't let that put you off - if you like it, use it, it just means you'll have to explain the pronounciation more than if you chose something more obvious. I have a very very common first name but my kooky parents chose a slightly different way of spelling it so I always have to spell it, I also have to spell my surname because I can't actually pronounce it very well myself! It's mildly tedious but not a problem.

Thumbwitch · 21/02/2012 14:00

Still not sure I'd get it right, from the way you've typed the pronunciation - I'd say Ah-veen, is that what you meant? Or is it meant to be Ay-veen?

In the end, it's not really any different to a name like Siobhan, or Niamh, it's just a bit less usual outside of Ireland, maybe - but people around your DD will learn how to pronounce it. It's a beautiful name, btw, in sound as well as meaning.

imnotmymum · 21/02/2012 13:57

prob would have said ay-bin !! but people soon get used to it although might be annoying when older to keep correcting but of course may have a nick name by then !!!

bagelmonkey · 21/02/2012 13:48

Yes, but DH is Irish & I've lived there.

ragged · 21/02/2012 13:46

No idea, I am foreign. If I had to guess, Ay-bean?

SoupDragon · 21/02/2012 13:45

Having looked at it and thought abut what little I know about irish pronunciation, I would probably have guessed at Aye vinn.

TwllBach · 21/02/2012 13:44

I'd have a good go... I think I would get the 'bh' being a 'v' but might end up with something like Ay vin or Eye vin. It looks pretty though Smile

Jacksterbear · 21/02/2012 13:43

I would have pronounced it Eye-vin or Ay-vin.

SoupDragon · 21/02/2012 13:43

No, I wouldn't have a clue other than it begins with A and ends in N :) I would sy that, outside of Ireland, she would have to spell and pronounce it every single time.

Most people learn to cope with foreign spellings/pronunciations though.

scarletforya · 21/02/2012 13:43

I'd know but I'm Irish. .

Saltire · 21/02/2012 13:40

I'd have a rough idea how to pronounce it.

MrsPlugThePlumber · 21/02/2012 13:38

I wouldn't have a clue, but I have no connection with Ireland whatsoever.
