What do you think of the name Bosco?
I love this name, and have met a couple of guys called Bosco. I always think "I Love that name!"
But do people generally like it or will they think I am mental? Am I subjecting my child to a life time of slagging??!
I actually live in the North now, where the TV show wasn't as big...what do you think?

I should point out that I don't even know if DC3 is a boy yet! But I think it might be...

I'd go for the middle name option, am also Irish, so to me it'd be the equivalent to calling him worzel :)

madaboutmadmen · 28/02/2012 20:37

I'm not Irish but Bosco makes me think of ice cream as one of the flavours you always see in Italy is 'Frutti di Bosco' Fruits of the Forest. The fact that it means forest in another language is quite nice I suppose.

SayBoo · 28/02/2012 18:31

I know a Bosco, Irish, about 60 - its his 6actual^ name, btw. Its quite cool, I think. Smile

bobbledunk · 28/02/2012 18:26

I know a Bosco, it's a nickname not a real name though. I am old enough to have grown up with the puppet but nobody of your son's generation will know anything about that. I quite like it actually. Go for itGrin

frendleeowl · 27/02/2012 10:19

Loved Bosco. Had him as me Facebook picture profile for a while. Migrated from Ireland when I was 14, lived in Irish NY, then London, now Surrey so. I could be sentimentally biased. That said, I think the name has character. Nil se ufasach!

saynothing · 21/02/2012 11:25

I'm in NI and know 2 bosco's both grown men so probably named before the puppet came about. I have never once thought it was a weird name though, although I might think it now if someone called their baby it iyswim.

squoosh · 21/02/2012 11:19

If you decide to call your son Bosco you will then need to have another son straight away and call him Kermit. They will be able to support each other against the 'hilarious' jokes they will receive everyday for.the.rest.of.their.lives.

The only acceptable circumstances in which you could name him Bosco would be if you could guarantee that in his lifetime he would never visit Ireland or meet an Irish person. But an Irish child, growing up in Ireland................ no.

I hate to say it but that annoying ginger puppet of indeterminate sex OWNS that name.

Happyasapiginshite · 20/02/2012 23:14

O god no, don't do it. Awful awful awful tv show with the most irritating character ever. Please don't do this to your child.

justhayley · 20/02/2012 22:41

Never heard of it and not keen on the name - much prefer Roscoe - my very first crush when I was about 11 lol

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 20/02/2012 00:42

What about Rocco that has a similar sound?

MrsJoeDuffy · 20/02/2012 00:15

AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAHAHAAAAAAAAA

Ahem.

No, sorry you just can't.

FreddieMercurysBolero · 19/02/2012 23:20

Yes, looong memories and huge chips on our shoulders. No wonder we're fucked.

woopsidaisy · 19/02/2012 21:11

Curse you RTE with your little puppet!!

Point taken.

Back to the drawing board....

I just asked ds1 who is 15, "What do you think of calling a little boy Bosco?"
and his first reaction was to burst out laughing and then he said, "Wasn't that some kind of puppet?"

wigglesrock · 19/02/2012 20:25

I'm in the North, have just asked my husband to be totally sure and he just said "Oh God that strange little puppet from RTE, creepy".

ThePathanKhansWitch · 19/02/2012 20:19

Why not use it as a middle name?.

vitaminC · 19/02/2012 20:14

Not Irish, so don't know anything about the puppet, but the name sounds pleasant to me. Doesn't particularly seem Irish, but definitely Catholic, as there is a Catholic high school down the road from me called Don Bosco :)

mathanxiety · 19/02/2012 20:13

Don't call him Dustin. My mother still hasn't got over the shame of 'sending a bloody singing turkey' to the Eurovision.

What's third on your list? Dustin? Grin

woopsidaisy · 19/02/2012 18:53

FreddieMercurysBolero · 19/02/2012 18:47

Ted, as in the super-evil giant panda on the Den who used to attack Ray, Zig and Zag on an alarmingly regular basis? Noooo! Grin

AThingInYourLife · 19/02/2012 18:20

You can't call an Irish child, living in Ireland, Bosco FFS :o

I'm with Freddie - uafásach ar fad!

You might as well call him Gonzo.

AnEcumenicalMatter · 19/02/2012 18:15

I'm in the North too. RTE was surprisingly widespread in the 80s and 90s up here. Even in the arsehole of nowhere remote, rural areas.
