DH and I both teachers and looking for quirky names!

My DH and I are both teachers and don't want a name that will remind us of any pupil in particular- so we need something quirky/unusual but not totally "out there"!
DS is 14 months and called Logan- a name which is unusual but not in the realms of wacky and everyone seems to love it.
DC2 due in August and we don't know the sex.
Any ideas?
We've come up with a couple:
Blake
Riley
Noah

Violet
Scarlet (I don't like but DH does!)
Summer (too corney for an August baby??)

I've taught a Lena who was lovely and I really love the name , but I also taught a Boudeccia, who lived up to her name!!

thereistheball · 18/02/2012 20:02

OP - Riley is also a Scottish surname, like Logan.

befuzzled · 18/02/2012 18:41

hundreds of Millies and Finlays round here. I like Blake.

There are at least 4 Millies in YR/Y1 at DS's school at the moment. All shortened from Amelia rather than Millicent though...

I would stay away from Riley I think you will see an influx of them in the next few years. How about Romily or Anna for a girl. Ellis for a boy.

Hero could be a big name to live up to! I love eating honey but never considered it as a name....(more pondering)

Milly!! I like that! Tilly is the cats name which I love and Milly sounds nice too (don't get hurt feelings countess!). Maybe Millicent when she's being a posh grown up and Milly to her friends...? Hmmmmm

Now Countess that sounds like sour grapes to me and I held you in such high esteem! You even had a sparkly gold star....
littlefish I did suggest Talon but DH thought it was odd ( but Blaize is acceptable to him!!)
likeabadventcandle- love Florence but its the rabbits name! Have been toying with Rose for a middle name.
DH has reminded me he liked Thor and Hercules 1st time round (sighs)

We had the same problem as dp is a teacher and every flaming name reminded him of one of his former or current pupils! Nightmare and our lists were thrown out of the window once dd arrived as she didnt "look" like any of our short listed names!

girls
Daisy
Edith (Eadie for short)
Milly
Amber
iris
Lydia (not quirky but not as common)
Linsey (ditto above)

Boys
Reuben
Rowan
Ronnie (not ordinal but dp's favorite!)
Darcy (boy or girl)

Good luck Smile

countessbabycham · 18/02/2012 17:27

Jane
John....

Littlefish · 18/02/2012 17:21

I've taught....

Talon
Prince

Either of those any good Wink

Littlefish · 18/02/2012 17:20

Please throttle your dh. Blaize is one of the worst names I've heard in a long time!

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 18/02/2012 17:12

Travis
Rex
Angus

Jemima
Rose
Florence

Like Blake and Noah, do not like Riley. Like Violet and Scarlett, but not Summer.

Chateauneuf · 18/02/2012 17:03

What about Radhika or Neroli for girl?

KinkyDorito · 18/02/2012 16:53

I have no suggestions - just wanted to wish you luck as I know only too well the whole saga of 'I've taught one of those and I refuse to call my baby that' Grin.

countessbabycham · 18/02/2012 16:52

If you'd picked my names you wouldn't have this problem......

MrsKitty · 18/02/2012 16:48

[Grin] your dh is losing the plot with so many names flying around!

Naturally281110 · 18/02/2012 16:48

She did? Humph! I do like it to be clear cut in terms of boy or girl name. We didn't mind it being a surname as Logan (DS name) is technically a Scottish surname aparantly. Although I was a little bewildered to hear Logan is an up and coming girls name!
Now I think about it......Blake Lively is a girl and that was one of our boys names..... hmmmmmm!!!!

OP - this may not matter to you but Stella McCartney has named one of her daughters Riley. So kids may think your boy has a girl's name (when in fact he has a surname for a first name).

Naturally281110 · 18/02/2012 16:15

mrskitty- am starting to worry about DH sanity. After loving Elodie to almost the point of excluding everything else yesterday, this morning he haughtily informed me he'd never even heard of the name let alone said he liked it and was I winding him up!!?? Eh?? Confused. Maybe I'm the one who's nuts??!!
grubbalo- good idea about the national names statistics, thanks.

Countess- sounds like labour of love! Am still mightly impressed with how many names there were- I have them all written out on pieces of paper spread all around the kitchen. The plan being that a obvious "winner" will leap out at us eventually! Failing that DH announced that if it's a boyhecan pick and if it's a girl I can pick Hmm like i'm going to agree to that!

OP posts:
countessbabycham · 18/02/2012 15:39

Naturally I can forgive but I'm not sure I'll ever forget....Wink

I am planning to name each and every one of my DD's cuddly toys as part of my recovery process.....

Good Luck!

Naturally281110 · 18/02/2012 15:35

countessbaby- I feel terrible now! You were very impressive with all your suggestions only problem is DH did wrinkly nose thing which means "no!" How about I award you an A* and one of my sparkly gold stars i reserve if pieces of outstanding work (youd never guess i teach 11-18 yr olds rather than tiddlers!) I'm sure you've given other people lots of ideas and if it's anything like my DS we'll be changing our minds right until it pops out! (I wanted Finlay for my DS but allegedly I agreed to Logan- after 40hrs in labour and forceps so I'd have probably agreed to anything at that point! Wink
tildaandatchie and scoobydont I am rushing off to wave those names infront of DH- hopefully he'll get bored and I'll get to pick!
