We both like the name Humphrey very much, but it does seem to be a love it or hate it name. What's the MN verdict?

A baby Humphrey might be cute, but imagine when he's 14 and trying to be in with the cool crowd, or 25 and trying to be taken seriously as anything other than a young fogey type. Don't do it!

BombayBaby · 23/02/2012 15:03

No, sorry.. It sounds like a cat's name.

oikopolis · 22/02/2012 22:48

Hump. no.

welovesausagedogs · 22/02/2012 14:39

no.

goingtoofast · 22/02/2012 14:31

I love it, called a hamster Humphrey when I was a teen. Don't think I could actually use it for a baby...

LouMacca · 22/02/2012 14:26

LOL ButHeNeverDid - brilliant!! I remember the adverts but had forgotten Muhammad Ali was in one - quality!!

Watch out, watch out there is Humphrey about!

Does anyone else remember the adverts for milk in the 70? Or am I the oldest person on here.

There was something mysterious offscreen (Humpfrey) who used a red and white striped straw to steal other people's milk.

squoosh · 22/02/2012 13:10

Humphrey is just awful. Cute on a Jack Russell, not on a human.

It's such a lumpen, beige, misshapen mess of a name.

emmyloo2 · 22/02/2012 13:03

I must admit, I secretly love this name but not sure I would be brave enough to use it. If someone had a little Humphrey though I would think it is super cute. Humph for short.

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 22/02/2012 01:41

Hideous.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 20/02/2012 15:38

DD's beloved elephant is Humphrey Smile I think it would be cute on a baby but not once they got older.

othersideofchannel · 20/02/2012 14:35

I quite like Humphrey actually - those who say it is 'dated' and an 'old mans' name forget that the old Humphreys were once little too. Peoples' associations change very quickly once they meet a cool young teenage Humphrey - they start to associate the name with him, not some old man they used to know.

But I agree about the lack of nice nicknames - but would you have to shorten it?

HumphreyCobbler · 18/02/2012 19:55

It is a truly excellent name.

benne81 · 18/02/2012 19:17

Love it

PopcornBiscuit · 18/02/2012 10:20

I don't like it, but then I also dislike Reggie, Ronnie, Bertie etc.

NotAnotherNewNappy · 18/02/2012 08:02

Yes! Classic and cute.

DialMforMummy · 16/02/2012 13:20

I quite agree with you Forties.

LaFilleSurLePont · 16/02/2012 13:07

I don't like those names you mentioned either,Forties, but at least you could introduce yourself without cringing. Humphrey is hideous.

cutteduppear · 16/02/2012 09:18

No, please

melika · 16/02/2012 09:12

Sorry, not a cats chance in hell, would I pick it!

FortiesCromarty · 16/02/2012 09:11

Thank you PestoPenguin! We'll see when he's born whether he looks like a baby Elephant or not Smile

I agree Forties. I think it's better than all the ones you've listed. I like it more than Florence, Teddy etc as well.

FortiesCromarty · 16/02/2012 08:54

But how can a 15 year old Humphrey be any worse than the myriad Archies, Alfies, Reggies, Ronnies, Berties and equally appalling names? Humphrey is a proper name and lovely.
