Is Lucy too popular?

Have been ages trying to decide between Lucy and Louisa. Now DD1 has started preschool and two children are called Lucy, plus two boys called Lucas and one called Luke. Is this just an unfortunate coincidence or is the name overused?
Baby has been around for weeks with only a nickname - I feel like I am failing her with my indecision. Nickname is Lulu. It has been suggested that I just go with that name, but it just does not seem right to let her grow up without a grown up name.

I have a teenage Lucy; she has always been the only one in her class, though there's always been others in the school. There was one two years older, and one three years younger. She was the only Lucy in her Brownies and the only one in her Guides. I think it's getting more popular, though, as I know a couple of under fives.

I don't know any Louisas, only one Louise and two Lucias (one aged 19, the other aged 9).

My Lucy likes her name.

jellybeans · 11/02/2012 13:33

I like it but it is very popular where i live with several toddlers and babies given the name in the last couple of years in a small town.

EllenParsons · 11/02/2012 04:19

Lucy does always seem quite popular but with good reason - it is a lovely name! It was my childhood favourite name that I had always planned to call my future DD (but my cousin got there and used the name before me!) I don't think it is TOO over done though. There is always a risk of multiple DC with the same name at school but I don't think being a Lucy definitely resigns you to being Lucy A, B or C.

Louisa is also very pretty. Nice name either way :)

EttiKetti · 10/02/2012 18:55

I have a Lucy and know only two more, both in their 20s. Mine is 9 and I still love it, although she's mostly a lulu!!

Petrean · 10/02/2012 18:54

I know 3... All born in the last 5 months. I think it's definitely back on the up.

pilates · 10/02/2012 18:54

Both very nice names.

PercyFilth · 10/02/2012 18:52

Lucy is a much older name than Lucinda, which is a fancification of Lucy/Lucia.

I think Lucy has fallen a little recently in popularity, but is still more prevalent than Louisa. OTOH, Louisa may be the Next BigThing, who can tell!

If you choose Louisa, Lucy is still a feasible pet name, so she could have the best of both worlds.

Montsti · 10/02/2012 18:40

I know a few - it's not unusual but certainly not faddy so I wouldn't worry - a pretty/feminine timeless name. I prefer it to Louisa too!

SensitivityChip · 10/02/2012 17:47

I like Lucy.

I grew up with quite a few (late twenties) but don't hear it so often now.

Pumpkinsandpickles · 10/02/2012 17:45

We have a Leah whose nn is also Lulu.

I know 5 Lucy's off the top of my head - ages are 8,3,3,1,2 days.

I really like the name - its timeless and it isn't one of those names that I would think mattered if there was more than one in a year.

ilovemountains · 10/02/2012 16:54

There are four Lucy's in our preschool class of 24. Quite a posh area, does that mean it'll be popular in a couple of years time?

tummytickler · 10/02/2012 16:46

I have got 4 dc and don't know any Lucy's under the age of 30. I know loads 30+ though. I know quite a few small Luca's and one Louise age 4, but no Louisa's.

fiveisanawfullybignumber · 10/02/2012 16:20

We have a Lucia, but she gets called Lulu. It suits her.
Can pronounce it two ways, ours is the Italian (Maltese way) Lu-che-ya, or spanish Lu-si-aa.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 10/02/2012 16:18

Dog not do

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 10/02/2012 16:18

Dd would have been Lucy except mil stupidly named her do it years ago. Angry it's a beautiful name Smile

CharlieBoo · 10/02/2012 16:13

I'm a Lucy and have always liked it. I have 2 kids and don't know any little Lucy's, none in ds' class or school that I know of and certainly none in dds preschool. I've never been a fan of Louise/a. Good luck in choosing

Surf25 · 10/02/2012 15:30

Lucy is a great name. I know three; an 8 yr old, 2 yr old and a 3 yr old. Doesn't put me off tbh. Please choose the name you love or you might regret it later..you can't control how many there may or may not be in a potential class when they're at school/nursery... lulu is a lovely nn too Smile

Yama · 10/02/2012 15:11

Lucy is a great name. You don't want to regret not going with your heart in a few years.

hubbahubster · 10/02/2012 15:09

Three actually, Plonker :)

Hate my first name, especially since one of the shortened versions is often a name on its own, so there are LOADS of girls with the same/similar name.

hubbahubster · 10/02/2012 15:07

Oh, how about Lucia, Luciana or Luella/Louella?

Plonker · 10/02/2012 15:04

Wow, there were two hubbahubsters?? I'm impressed Wink

Plonker · 10/02/2012 15:02

I have a Lucy. She's always been the only one in her class.

It doesn't particularly bother me anyway though, if you like it, use it.
It's a gorgeous name and I've never regretted giving it to dd.

hubbahubster · 10/02/2012 15:00

And I'm with you on the 'xxx A' or whatever thing. I hated being 'hubbahubster H' at school.

hubbahubster · 10/02/2012 14:59

Lucy was originally a shortened version of Lucinda, wasn't it? How about that or Lucille?

My dog is Lulu short for Tallulah BTW...

kiteflying · 10/02/2012 14:56

Thanks everyone! I know it should not be important, but somehow the sight of those little name tags with "Lucy M" and "Lucy B" made my heart sink. My DD has a friend in her kindygym class that she knows as "Ava B".
