Is Lucy too popular?

I'm a 23yr old lucy. I have six friends my age called Lucy/lucie but only know one baby with the name. Go for it!

I'm biased but I think you should go with Lucy. I've only known a handful but IME each has had a nickname not necessarily a shortened version but more to do with their personality/surname etc, a nn develops as a person grows.

For the record I'm not 'cutsie' in the slightest - I've always liked my name and from personal experience I'd say it works for all ages.

zumm, my teenage Lucy isn't at all cutesy, and I've never thought of it as a cutesy name. Lucy Stone (1818-1893) was an inspirational campaigner for women's rights. Lucy in the Peanuts cartoons is very bossy. Lucy Eyesbarrow was an Agatha Christie character who was super-efficient. Lucy Mackenzie was a teenage Riot Girrrrl cartoonist who drew cartoons for my favourite feminist magazine; I saved one of her columns to give my own Lucy when she was old enough. Lucy M Montgomery wrote the "Anne of Green Gables" books.

Haha, my DD is Lucy and I'm Louisa :-) I like my name as its unusual and Lucy was always first choice for my baby!
There were 3 Lucys in her nursery class, Lucy L, S and R & the school split them all up into different reception classes.

I think it's a beautiful classic name that will never date. I know a couple of little Lucys, but it's not very popular at the moment (flower names seem to be all the rage).

I've never met a nasty Lucy either - they are always lovely, fun, gentle people.

I also v like the name Lucy, and am considering using it, but like ecg, I wonder how it will carry when older.
Anyone know any adult Lucys that aren't cutsie? - wonder whether the sweetness of the name impacts how girls with this name are treated and thus what they go on to do in adulthood?

Lucy is a great name for a baby, perhaps too cutesy when older though.

Louisa would suit an adult better and, as people have said, you can call her Lou or whatever when she's little.

What's wrong with Louise? I find Louisa on the frilly side tbh.

Lily? Or is this really commonplace these days?

I love Lucy as a name but think Louisa is a better name if you want the nn Lulu, does that make sense?

I have a Lucy. We've moved to France and she loves being the only one with a 'y' because over here its Lucie. We call her Cece sometimes because that's all her older brother managed when she came along.

I agree that if you love it, don't get distracted by possible multiples in a class. Of all the names you'd pressume would be doubled up, in my DDs class there are two Phoebes and two Roberts. And just the one Lucy! You simply never know..

I have a Lucy! Love the name it suits her to a tee. Apparently its something like 13th most popular for her age (20 months now) but we've not met any others. We know a Lucia (pronounced Lu chee ah) but its different enough.

Go with your gut and try not to worry :) Maybe an unusual middle name would help? (Ours is Lucy June after her grandmother) x

I know four little Lucy's under 6, a Lucille and a LuLu; don't know any Louisas.. I've always thought Eloise was very pretty as another suggestion?

Having said all the above, I also think that Louisa is a lovely name

I know of a couple of others too, of varying ages from adult down to about 6

It's a classic, timeless name which is popular because it's lovely (imo)

When we named dd1 Lucy we didn't realise how popular it was but even if we had, it wouldn't have made a difference

A name like Lucy, which is lovely and not faddy will always be popular - why? Because its such a beautiful, timeless name and that's a great thing.
I'm really pleased I called my DD Lucy rather than a faddy name, a top 10 name or a yoo-neek spelling thereof.

Go with the name you love the most because in 10 days / weeks / months / years, the last thing you'll want to be doing is thinking "i wish I'd called her X but I didn't because mumsnet ppl said xyz about it."

I agree that it is nice to have a 'sunday' name, due in 8 weeks with DC4 and haven't got a single boys name!
