Name panic >> Susan + Suggestions....

I'm having enormous trouble with names with only a week 'til due date. We know we're having a little girl. OH has turned his nose up at most of the list and the only name we could even remotely agree on is Susan (Susie/Suzi) which wasn't my favourite but I could compromise. At which point, my mother who has been giving 'helpful suggestions' all along (most of which sound like boarding-school prefects or horsey-horsey-rah-rah names) said that Susan was boring, outdated, dull and WHATever that she would call her something else - quite out of character ConfusedSad !!! So, please please I'd like MNers's thoughts on Susan? And any more suggestions that aren't Top Ten but aren't strange or twee as my brain has stopped.....

Oooh, I hadn't realised that there was a whole another page of posts! Thankyou all for your opinions!! @pressingbuttons & mathanxiety I think you've hit the nail on the head. It was already a compromise and i haven't found a "YES!!! she's one of those" yet. Thankyou VM for pointing that out Grin !!!! She is a few days overdue now and I'm off work finally, so I've got my MN suggestions above, reloaded all the name websites and taken the books of names off the shelf again!!

You don't really like it and that's all that matters. Why don't you and your H write two more lists.

fwiw, my parents couldn't agree between Suzanne (mum) and Susannah (dad) so I ended up as something else entirely, chosen by my aunt. I knew quite a few Susans growing up and one Suzette, which I liked a lot. (I have since then met a lot of 40something Sues).

I am a Susan under 40 (just!), known as Susie. I never felt comfortable with Susan when I was younger and would have preferred to be Susannah which seems a bit younger and prettier and is at least longer than Susie - it always felt odd to have a "short" name which was the same length as my "real" name.

I know a Susan Michelle, she doesn't like her name - I call her Soozie Floozie Wink

I'm with your Mum! I like horsey-horsey-rah-rah names Grin and I find Susan a little 'boring, outdated and dull' especially when it turns into Sue. Probably because I grew up with a lot of them. Susie is okay.

My first name is Susan, have always been known by my second name, never really liked it - hate Sue, but the more I say it now the more I'm starting to like it. (Much prefer Susannah tho!)

Susan, Susy for short is really cute. Susy seems stronger, somehow than Susie. I prefer -y to -ie as a general rule anyway.

Susan or Susannah-Suzanne isnt as nice-I also like Suki[Sukey] as nn as well as Susie.I think Susan is underused these days.
I know a little girl called Susan Eloise:)

Susan is a lovely name. It is right up in the top five on my list too. Sad that i can't use it.

Susan is a lovely, cassic, feminine name with lots of nicknames and the fact that it isn't 'fashionable' means she won't have to add a modifier or surname initial to her name like all the little Evies, Ellies and Graces have to these days.

IslaValargeone, I would also disagree that Susan lacks imagination - imo it is excactly the opposite and would be a lovely change from all the top 10 names that ARE dull and lacking in imagination.

Another vote for Susannah here. I love it. One of my future daughters will be called Susannah Rose so I can call her Annie Rose as a nn. :) I have heard of a little one recently called Zuzu, which is a very cute nn IMO. Or Susie, Suki, Anna...really can't go wrong!

Forget all our opinions here on MN and your mum's; they're all red herrings; it seems to me that really it's not the name you want for your little girl and your mum's stronger opinion has made you think you do. Big of a dig your heels in moment maybe... Make sense?
Susan is a lovely name; my mum is Suzanne and she is called many variants of that (Susie, Sue, Susan) but really 'imho' I just don't think you've found the name you love.....
and islavalargeone; to say the name 'lacks imagination' when I think of all the eve, evies, with grace and rose and mae/mai as mn....seriously? Hmm

I know quite a few Susannahs. Very popular with Churchgoing folk. Much prefer it to Susan. Susan belongs with Christine, Pamela, Janet and Linda in the 50s Hall of Fame.

I' ve been teaching 20 years and never had a Susan or Susannah in my class, really due a revival , cool, understated, suits adult or child, you will be a trend setter!

Susie is a lovely nn (nb NOT suzi)

What about Elizabeth? Lots of nn possibilities there too.

Agree it's due for a revival - just wait 10 years and it will be fab, and all the Isabella's will be rolling their eyes saying 'mum why did you call me generational equivalent of Sharon'Smile

Trust your own instincts. Everyone will have their own opinions but it's your baby! If you and your DH like it, go for it and sod the others!

FWIW I think Susan is a nice name. The little girl in Maricle on 34th Street is called Susan and I think it suits a little girl.

You and your DH are going to have to make loads of choices as parents, and no one else will have a say in your decisions, so why should the baby's name be any diiferent?
