We know a Beans. Cool girl.

MitrochondrialEve · 08/02/2012 18:42

Jacobina sounds like a rebellion. Will make Tudors and Stuarts at school very interesting! Brings to mind carved heavy dark wooden furniture.

I know of an Andrewina, due to the Scottish tradition. She is not in the least bit posh, and usually tells people that she is called Andrina. The guffaws at her real name may have put her off it!

Binny a nice nickname??? Not to offend the poster who suggested it - but why would being called after a bin be good?

Ribena, beana, bin, etc would be very handy nicknames at school and the connection between beans and flatulence would be all to easy to make.

I've done a look-up.
397 Jacobinas born in Scotland between 1855-1900
180 Jacobinas born in Scotland between 1900-1950
13 Jacobinas born in Scotland between 1950-2009.

So very Victorian, and slightly old-lady chic. Go for it!!

WillCrossThatBridge · 08/02/2012 01:55

Oh my, Jacoba Smulders?! Ugh! Cobie Smulders...slightly worse.

WillCrossThatBridge · 08/02/2012 01:55

Nope, definitely not.

CheerfulYank · 08/02/2012 01:09

Cobie Smulders (who is an actress on How I Met Your Mother) is named Jacoba.

I hated it at first, but I think there's something to it after all... :)

Mumcentreplus · 08/02/2012 00:59

No way... Jacqueline perhaps..Jacobina..just sounds made up..'originally I wanted a boy'..'but I got a girl stylee'..not good...

GothAnneGeddes · 07/02/2012 23:52

Fuck no, woman!!!!!

It is a hideous name, one so bad that the poor child will want to stab you in the eyeballs for giving it to them.

MamaMaiasaura · 07/02/2012 23:45

I like it, and if she wanted to shorten it she could. What middle name and surname?

She could be (as well as Jacobina of course)
Jacs
Judy
Bina
Jackie
Cobi
Ina
Bean

I think some posters have been quite unkind

Janoschi · 07/02/2012 23:41

Some comments in here are a bit harsh! Go for it if you love it. Mumsnetters like names such as Eva, Sophia, Romilly and Katherine but we can't ALL be called those. Jacobina IMHO is lovely. Conjures up a spirited Scottish wildness to me. But really who cares what a bunch of strangers think? You'll be the one saying it 2000 times a day. She can always be Jay or Bobbie or something later on. I have a weird name and it's fab. I work in the art world and weird names are perfect here. I think names are such big issues with babies and young kids. No-one's yet given me an odd reaction as an adult.

BustersOfDoom · 07/02/2012 22:14

No, awful! As others have said, it will make people assume that you were desperate for a Jacob and foisted a feminised version on your daughter rather than giving her a decent name.

JekyllandHydeMum · 07/02/2012 21:56

Well, I like it. Very Victorian Scottish. I think (could be wrong!) that several Victorian Jacobinas came from families with romantic notions of the Jacobites, bonny Prince Charlie, the Prince over the water, white roses etc etc.

I picture Jacobina with red hair, fair skin, and a dreamy, romantic air.

beatricequimby · 07/02/2012 20:55

It is traditionally Scottish, I think and very, very posh. If you own a large estate and do a lot of shooting, then yes. Otherwise absolutely not.

tammytoby · 05/02/2012 22:18

Not any different than Thomasina, Phillipa, Edwina, Christina. Why not?

seeker · 05/02/2012 21:58

It was traditional at one time in the north of Scotland to put -ina on the end of a father's name for a daughter. It made for some wierdnesses that mane Jacobina look positively normal!

Egg · 05/02/2012 21:46

Realise I have really messed up. Have twins and boy twin is called Jacob. Why oh why did I not think of Jacobina for girl twin???? Is it too late now they are four?

cuissesdetonnerre · 05/02/2012 21:38

I have a Jacob but Jacobina is DREADFUL

BuntyPenfold · 05/02/2012 21:34

Oh yes, I think she would agree it is unusable; I was just saying that the OP didn't make it up.

3boysgirlontheway · 05/02/2012 06:27

No way, all I would think was that you wanted a boy.

scottishmummy · 05/02/2012 01:44

Did you make it up?
Hideous

.

HolyNoSheDittantBatman · 05/02/2012 01:42

Judy for short or Judy because her parents gave her a ridiculous name that she doesn't wish to go by?

BuntyPenfold · 05/02/2012 01:01

Not made up; I know of one, called Judy for short.

breatheslowly · 03/02/2012 19:55

No - sounds made up and like you really wanted a boy called Jacob (sorry if you did or you have family reasons).

33goingon64 · 03/02/2012 19:52

I think you have made that up.

AThingInYourLife · 03/02/2012 19:48

Terrible. Big thumbs down from the Belfast jury.
