Pronounced Shay - I like it, my other half loves it but I want to be sure. Opinions please.

Well I love it, but then it's my Ds's name. He is Sé spelt the old Irish way. It can be spelt Shay, Sé or Shea (derived from the Irish name O' Shea) and it is NOT a knacker's (Gypsy) name! I like our spelling because I like Irish names to be spelt in the Irish, but I suppose it depends where you live (my English inlaws did rather freak at the spelling at first,) we are in Ireland, so no one really bats an eyelid. By the way, the name means 'Hawk-like' and 'Stately'.

TheBigmouthBugle · 02/02/2012 22:40

Is Che pronounced ch-ay or sh-ay?

canyou · 02/02/2012 22:36

GENDER: Masculine
USAGE: Irish
PRONOUNCED: SHAY

History
Anglicized form of SÉAGHDHA
VARIANTS: Séaghdha, Shea
DIMINUTIVE: Sé
FEMININE FORM: Shea
I stand corrected it never occurred to me to associate it with Seaghdha which I know 2 people called Confused Grin

StrandedBear - yes there are Irish grandparents. Don't like Shane or Seamus for that matter.

Hmmm some comments reiterate what I've been thinking.

Yes it's a celtic name and can be both male & female. It's not short for Seamus although can be as in Shay.

I am Irish I would assume it was a NN for Seamus

hohohoshedittant · 02/02/2012 22:27

I like it. I only know one Shay (other than Shay given) and it's a girl so I associate it with being a girls name.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 02/02/2012 22:27

and in Irish a word written spelt Shay would be pronounced hay or ay cause the h silences the consonant before it doesn't it??

ReduceRecycleRegift · 02/02/2012 22:21

doesn't Se just mean "him" in Irish? as in Me, Tu, Se, Si... Never heard it used as a full name in Ireland

Beamur · 02/02/2012 22:20

I knew a Chay at school (think it's a version of Charles also) which always stood out as being very unusual - I've never come across another.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 02/02/2012 22:19

I'd assume it was short for Seamus, sounds way too pet-namey for me as a full name not a shortened one

workshy · 02/02/2012 22:15

is it a name in it's own right?

I do like it but then I'm a manchester city fan and shay given used to live on my street and I was all dreamy lol

RedHotPokers · 02/02/2012 22:13

I know a Se, which I was told was the Irish spelling of shay.

TheCuntwormUnderfoot · 02/02/2012 22:13

Horrid. Just nothing to it.

EdithWeston · 02/02/2012 22:10

I think of it as a nn for Seamus.

usualsuspect · 02/02/2012 22:10

I like it

Showmethemhappyfeet · 02/02/2012 22:09

I think it's a lovely name Smile

AuntingCarse · 02/02/2012 22:09

I love it.

ChickensGoMeh · 02/02/2012 22:07

Isn't it short for Seamus?

cece · 02/02/2012 22:07

I know a Che.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 02/02/2012 22:06

It can be Shay, Shea, Shae. It's a bit of a knackers name.
