We are keeping baby's name a secret to everyone we know, and are currently leaning towards Monty. I am having doubts about it though - and would appreciate opinions on the name. Thank you!

Noah is lovely, much, much nicer! I only know one Noah compared with three Montys, but that might be reflective of the area rather than overall popularity.

madeindevon2 - Estella and Imogen were our favourites if we were having a girl.

lagrandissima - Boy! Many people are associating it with a dog name though aren't they?

It seems Monty is a name people either love or hate - not alot of opinions in the middle!

Our other top boy name is Noah - but it is becoming rather common these days. We were wanting something a little old fashioned, but not over-used.

We are open to other suggestions too though, and still keen to hear more opinions on Monty.

Dog or boy?

4madboys · 02/02/2012 21:03

i like it, i know a very sweet three yr old called monty :)

TinkerMaloo · 02/02/2012 21:00

dont do it!

mrsshears · 02/02/2012 20:34

Don't know if it puts you off but i have met several newborns called monty recently.

ahhhhhpushit · 02/02/2012 20:23

I know a Monatague nn Monty who is 15 months old.

Didnt like it at first but it has grown on me.

pilates · 02/02/2012 20:13

I think I like it, it's one of those names that has grown on me recently.

If you had asked me a couple of years ago I would probably have said no.

Petrean · 02/02/2012 20:11

I'm really sorry but when I hear Monty - I think Cocker Spaniel. Sad

hohohoshedittant · 02/02/2012 20:09

I think it's awful awful awful. I wouldn't even use it for a dog.

Just my opinion though, if you like it then use it!

I know 3 Monty's under 5.

SianBB · 02/02/2012 19:41

Really like Monty. In fact one of the only names we have for a boy.

I say go for it. My mum HATES dd's name and threatened to call her Jemima (to which it bears no relation) if we went with it. She doesn't and it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if she did :)

PopcornBiscuit · 02/02/2012 14:59

Not to my taste - too nickamey and posh/effete sounding.

But if you like it, use it :)

DottieRose · 02/02/2012 14:43

I really really love the name Monty and it was going to be a consideration for me however my relations dog is called Monty so I cant go there!

heliumballoon · 02/02/2012 11:39

Sorry I don't like it except for snakes. I know two pythons wittily called Monty. and I am scared of snakes so don't like the name for a person!

fiftyandlovingit · 02/02/2012 11:35

My dad was called Monty and my brother and sister-in-law called their son Monty after him; he was born 11 months after my Dad died. My Dad was the greatest person I have ever or will ever known, and if my nephew grows up half as great he'll be fantastic! My first ever post on Mumsnet - you can probably tell this thread touched a huge chord in me!

ExitPursuedByaBear · 02/02/2012 11:30

Love it - but then it is my dog's name. Wink

planestrainsautomobiles · 02/02/2012 11:25

I don't know any Monty(s) - we live in SE England. I do know one Jonty though.

PercyFilth · 02/02/2012 10:40

Montague is another source name for Monty.

Bellaholland · 02/02/2012 10:13

I really like it!

madeindevon2 · 02/02/2012 10:10

I love it. It's my top choice if I was having another boy. But I'm not. What do u like for girls??? As we might like similar?!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 02/02/2012 10:00

Apart from Withnail and dogs and Mr Don, it makes me think of the failed stage star in Sorry I've got no head.

BikeRunSki · 02/02/2012 09:48

Sounds like a nick name.
Sounds like he stands to inherit half of Wiltshire.
Wears boden, joules and crew for scruffs.
Nice chap though

southeastastra · 02/02/2012 09:33

horrible unless you're very upper middle class then could probably get away with it

funnypeculiar · 02/02/2012 09:32

Love it (as a shortening for Montgomercy/Montmorency)- despite loving Withnail (which, cult as it is, will not be known by your son's peers I suspect) I know one & he is lovely Smile Dh wouldn't entertain the long versions though!

SoFarWeAreEqual · 02/02/2012 09:29

I do like it but the 'Withnail and I' link is very strong indeed for me - thinking of the same quote as you, SlinkingOutsideInFrocks!
