What do you think of Dayna as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

This is my DD name, we thought it was lovely and unusual...what do you think???

School bully who terrorised dd was called Dayna. Vetoes it for me I'm afraid, but I always liked it prior to that.

yellowraincoat · 01/02/2012 13:49

Her name was spelt DANA Scully though.

I am an X files geek.

HardCheese · 01/02/2012 09:59

The Celtic fertility goddess would be pronounced 'Dana' (same 'a' sound as in 'harder'), though. To be honest, I would never connect that with 'Dayna' - did you put the 'y' in because you wanted people not to pronounce it as 'Dana' (Dahna)? It gives it a very American 1970s vibe for me.

JuluLu · 01/02/2012 08:47

OP, Dana isn't common, but Dayna certainly is!

thetasigmamum · 01/02/2012 07:27

makkapakka your phone obviously lacks a cultural hinterland. :( ;)

MakkaPakkasWilly · 01/02/2012 06:20

This thread confuses me. You have already named your daughter, you are asking what people think then saying you don't care when they say something negative.
I think that you must care, otherwise why post in the first place?
FWIW, Dana is not to my taste but is perfectly acceptable. Dayna sounds made up and my phone corrects it to Sauna.

TheBigmouthBugle · 01/02/2012 00:41

Grin poppadum too funny!

PoppadumPreach · 31/01/2012 19:29

If you're in Scotland, well Glasgow, she may have to put up with "Dayna Jobby" teasing, as a little girl I know did.

But spelt Dana I quite like it.

emblosion · 31/01/2012 19:15

I went to school with a boy called Dayna (same spelling) in North London in the 80s, I can't hear the name without thinking of him (he was really naughty). Not that that has any bearing on anyone else, ha ha.

thetasigmamum · 31/01/2012 17:17

I thought it all went downhill when she joined. Jenna and Cally were much much better.

HillyWallaby · 31/01/2012 17:15

I neither like nor dislike it really, but if you use it spell it the proper way - Dana. (which can be pronounced either Dayna or Darna) you don't need the extra Y

frankies69 · 31/01/2012 17:11

Is Dinah not the cat in Alice in Wonderland??? Its like Marmite I suppose... I am not offended Smile

Rhubarbgarden · 31/01/2012 17:03

I also like Dinah. But not Dayna, sorry.

TheBigmouthBugle · 31/01/2012 17:00

I went to school with about 6 of them!

frankies69 · 31/01/2012 16:51

Yes Scotland, The Scheme was filmed in the town I grew up in. Let me know if you need a translator! Although I think there were subtitles in some parts Grin

And on recent threads I've seen my name and my 3 dc names all slated, who cares? It's all personal choice and what's meaningful to you at the time.

frankies69 · 31/01/2012 16:30

My comment wasn't to you...I will watch The Scheme. Are you in the UK??

No I didn't take your comments to heart please don't think I did. When we named her we did have people saying argh Dayna...umm...not sure!! Ha Ha.

My DH actually saw it on a number plate and that is how it all came about...NO offence taken honestly Grin

Oldlady she lives in my hometown, imagine the remarks I'd get Grin

TheBigmouthBugle · 31/01/2012 16:24

Frankie I didn't mean it as an insult or that you'd named your DD after The Scheme! Read my post again, I LIKE the name (and the spelling) was just explaining why I could never use it (living here anyway)

I was a BIG X-Files fan, - Dana Scully anyone?

frankies69 · 31/01/2012 15:59

There is also no mistake in the pronounciation of her name. Spelling yes but pronounciation NO

frankies69 · 31/01/2012 15:57

Thank you very much for your input...we like it spelt that way as it is unusual...Dana is sooo common!!!

OP posts:
goingtoofast · 31/01/2012 15:56

Dana is okay but awful spelt Dayna.

frankies69 · 31/01/2012 15:55

Well thank you...never saw 'The Scheme' and Ghostbusters, I love that film!!!!

Ha ha it is a good talking point!!! Smile She suits it and she loves it

OP posts:
MyOhMyOh · 31/01/2012 15:54

I thought of Dana Barrett, from Ghostbusters? Zuuuuuule!

It's nice, I like it Smile

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 31/01/2012 15:53

The programme was a BBC one, called "The Scheme." Caused a bit of a scandal at the time.
