Gus

just found out I'm having a boy. What is the Mumsnet jury's verdict on Gus? He will be half Dutch and will have a long complicated surname, so the poor thing needs a simple first name that works in both languages.

I know a Gus short for Angus I think it's lovely

LaFilleSurLePont · 31/01/2012 18:15

As a nickname yes,but not as a first name.

Fantastic name but I would say that as I have one! He is just Gus. We have a very long surname so wanted a short first name. We have had very positive responses when telling people his name. Go for it, it's great!

I think it's great, and very Wodehouse (Fink-Nottle).

I would give a full form though - Augustus?

I love Gus... it does remind me of the mouse in Cinderella, but he is cute :) Good thinking to have a simple first name.

Is he really an Augustine?! Ha ha I never knew that! I can see why he uses Gus...

You are right, Gus O'Donnell makes it quite usable in a formal context. I didn't realise he is actually Augustine - that's fab! But possibly too longwinded with a long complicated surname. Hope you use it, Gus is a lovely name.

seasickgal · 31/01/2012 14:04

How about Angus, shortened to Gus?

Rhubarbgarden · 31/01/2012 14:01

I do really like Gustav, but with a van prefixed surname it's too clumsy. Gus is a stand alone name in Dutch (albeit spelt with the extra u) and the previous head of the UK civil service was a Gus, so I'm not worried about it being too informal.

I love it, but couldn't you go for Gustav/Gustave and Gus for short? There are so many great Gustav/es - Mahler, Holst, Klimt, Flaubert, Courbet, Doré - and for me, Gus doesn't quite pass the QC test.

Love it! Lekkkerrrrrr
