Eldest ds in tears about new dd's name....

I have just had a baby girl three weeks early. We didn't really choose any names before, just a short list. Ds (7) and dd (5) have been v excited about new baby. This afternoon they both came to see me in the hospital and were seriously lovely with her. Ds kissed her lots and lots. Dd just wanted to dress and undress her!

Dh took them home then came back to me and we decided on our name for new dd - (Elizabeth) Tess. When dh went home and told them her name my ds sobbed and sobbed and said he didn't like the name. Dh called me in hospital and I spoke to ds who cried again and said he didn't like name. I asked him what he did like. His answer was Felicity, Darrell or alicia (we've been reading mallory towers!), or Cecily. Now he was going to be Cecily if he was a girl. I love the name but a friend of ours has since called their child Cecily and I am just not sure about it any more. And part of me says 'tough, you are 6, you don't get to decide'. And I love the name Tess. Someone come and tell me what to do/say. I am exhausted, just given birth, am tired and emotional!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Congratulations on your new arrival! Could your DS choose a special nickname for the baby just for him as big brother to use? It could be another name stemming from Elizabeth or a cutesy one. Elizabeth is a beautiful name - he'll come round in time.

Sorry is her name Elizabeth Tess or Tess as a nn for Elizabeth?? Confused

Tess is not a real nn for Elizabeth............could he come up with a nn for her or the middle name?

My nephew was going to be called Freddie but their eldest ds kicked off about it and they changed it to Alfie. Shock

You get to choose and when he has his children you get no say. That's how it goes and Tess is a lovely name anyway.

I have an Elizabeth Tess and call her Tess, its a bit odd to hear of another! He'll get over it and maybe he can name her first doll or something Grin

nooka · 28/01/2012 21:29

'tough, you are 6, you don't get to decide" seems a perfectly appropriate response to me! However I don't understand why you are using Tess as your nn, as it is a derivative of Theresa not Elisabeth.

For managing the situation would you be OK with giving your ds some input into a middle name? Elisabeth Cecily for example?

SpecialBranch · 28/01/2012 21:29

Congratulations Smile

Agree that you and your DH get to decide on her name. How about a middle name - if you're not set on one then could DS help choose that? Elizabeth Cecily?

EauRouge · 28/01/2012 21:29

I'm sure he'll come to love the name, he's probably just a bit emotional with the arrival of his new sister. Congrats on your new DD :)

pinkteddy · 28/01/2012 21:28

Poor you that must have been a really difficult conversation - whats he got against the name - is it just because he didnt get to choose it?

Surf25 · 28/01/2012 21:27

Congratulations!
That's a hard one. I think you should go with the name that you and your dh have chosen but how about adding in Cecily as a middle name?

Sidge · 28/01/2012 21:27

Congratulations on your new baby Smile

He'll get used to the name. You are the parent so you choose, not him! Elizabeth is a beautiful name.

It could be worse, my DD1 was 5 when we had DD2 and wanted to call her Bacon.

snice · 28/01/2012 21:27

7 year olds can name puppies/kittens
you and DH name your baby-congratulations by the way!

Lightofthemoon · 28/01/2012 21:27

I'm so sorry to hear this but my brother cried when I was born because I was a girl and he had to get over it (and did!). I'm sure he'll be fine, I would keep the name you like.

Memoo · 28/01/2012 21:26

Sorry, but it's up to you not your ds. You can't change her name just because a 6 year old throws a paddy!
