I have an Oliver and I LOVE Ava would have used it but gave it to my DD as a middle name.

No, I don't think they are too similar. I'd also think long term rather than when they are kiddies and you are saying their names together, go with the names you love! :)

No I think they're both lovely, and go well together. My DSIS & I have very similar names, but it's never been a problem.

Written down they look different. However, if you are shouting them, which you will be in few years, they do sound very similar.
