Colin?

Pregnant with DS2.

My DFather passed away tragically just after we found out I was pg. V sudden. He did know about the pregnancy and was delighted though.

I'd really like to name DS2 after my dad. But my dad's name was Colin.

What do you think? He didn't have a middle name and we already double barrel (or I'd use his surname as a middle).

I can't think of any other names, whenever I try I keep coming back to Colin. But... it's what all the idiots on TV are called and nobody uses it now do they? I don't want DS2 to be mocked.

it really isnt a bad name at all. there wont be a million others in his class too :)

Stellan · 09/02/2012 13:21

Congratulations! Great name - uncommon among babies, easy to spell and pronounce, and has meaning for you and your family.

birdofthenorth · 09/02/2012 12:55

Peter Colin is better than Colin Peter. Something Colin Peter would be better still though. What is DS1's name?

Cubtrouble · 07/02/2012 13:25

Wondering,

Firstly really sorry to hear about your dad.

My hubby is a Colin he is generally the most perfect person i know! ;-))
So I really like the name.

Its a geek-cool name i think!! Some people call him Col.

I do think whatever you name your baby your Dad would have been happy.
When is your baby due? do you have a bit longer to decide!

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 06/02/2012 08:10

That is so lovely - congratulations and thank you for taking the time to update the thread - many people don't. Definitely think you've made the right choice. :)

DD is named after my late Mum and it's very special to me that they share a name (and their smile!).

wonderingaboutnames · 05/02/2012 21:43

Aww thankyou! I wanted to update since this thread was really helpful for me (not even that long ago! So amazing!)

Marcus just pinged into my head when I saw him, never really considered it, but Colin Marcus Double-Barrel Wink sounds good and he/we can go by his MN if Colin is too much in the future.

He does just look like a Colin though. It's weird but although I am still devastated about my dad, it's eased a lot now. Most of it is newborn snuggles of course but it's more than that.

Thankyou so much guys.

OOO never seen the end! Congrats on Baby Colin! :)

Lisatheonewhoeatsdrytoast · 05/02/2012 21:32

I like the name Colin, it's my DH's name and i wanted to name DS it, but he didn't let me :(

wonderingaboutnames · 05/02/2012 21:28

Hiya :)

Just letting mn know that my mum had a dramatic change of heart when he arrived, and Colin Marcus arrived a week ago Grin

He is beautiful and was born with loads of dark hair - just like my dad.

Colin is a good solid manly name in Scotland, popular in the west highlands, not a "nigel" name at all. Its not an old name up here but then i would say that as my younger brother is called Colin (childhood family nickname "Collywobbles"!).

wonderingaboutnames · 17/01/2012 18:58

I talked to my mum, and she said she'd rather DS2 didn't have Colin as a first name. She'd still like us to use Matthew (my dad's favourite boy's name).

Also showed DH this thread - we are going to work together to try and find a first name we both like, probably not Matthew, with Colin as a middle. He's going to think some more about having Peter in there as well :)

one of my rabbits is called colin :)

evamummy · 17/01/2012 13:02

Like Duncan, Colin will make a comeback as people look for more 'solid' names imo. Sorry to hear about your dad, op.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 12:33

The best option would certainly be for the Colin to be a middle name.

  • avoids possible hating of old fashioned name by child
  • avoids DH issues
  • avoids possible distress of DM and family by use of name all the time.

Your DH is being very odd and a bit dog in the manger though. He actively didn't want Peter as a mn when you suggested it. So it just looks as if he doesn't want his father commemorated for himself, but doesn't want YOU to have that either. That's hard to respect, tbh. He's either behaving very childishly, or he must hate the name Colin SO much that he's willing to look like a brat to try and put you off it!

For that reason, I would absolutely not have Peter as a first name, and quite probably not as a mn. Your DH doesn't want his son to carry that name, he just wants to score points - that's all wrong.

I'd go for Something Colin X-X, after pointing out to your DH that choosing Peter in these circumstances is, if anything, a bit of a slight to his father. And start talking more happily about a first name with no links to anyone.

nooka · 17/01/2012 04:17

I'm not sure I'd worry about your older son feeling left out somehow. My dd was named for two of her great grandmothers. dh wanted to use his grans name and I thought it would be nice to balance that our with my favourite granny's name too. ds (who came first ) is named after a historical figure coupled with a name essentially we thought sounded good with it. He's never complained that he doesn't have a family name.

I think that 'Colin Peter double-barrel' works just fine (obviously depending on the double-barrel) if the surname isn't too long and complicated then another at the front would probably be OK too, but it might need to be quite a short

Arlo Colin Peter double-barrel
Luke Colin Peter
Sean Colin Peter double-barrel
Hugh Colin Peter double-barrel

Or maybe quite long
Timothy Colin Peter double-barrel
Jonathon Colin Peter double-barrel

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 17/01/2012 00:39

Firth. Enough said.

DS has a 'Dad' name, though is universally known by a diminutive. By the time he's in his 20s/30s, i.e. in his prime, the name will be back again.

That's what happened to my name. Wink

I say go for it.

startail · 16/01/2012 23:54

Sorry to hear about your DF.
DD2s middle name is that of DMIL for exactly the same reason.
Colin is a nice name, there's one in DDs class.

Dilligaf81 · 16/01/2012 23:42

Sorry but I think its such an 'old' name and not in a good way- a bit like the thread for Nigel.
I know 2 collins one is nearly 60 and the other is 35 both use there middle names instead and really really dont like it.
A middle name or did you dad have a nickname or what was his middle name - reverse them so colin would by you DS middle name and your dads middle name his first. not sure Im making any sense anymore Confused

CheerfulYank · 16/01/2012 23:35

I think Colin Peter is great!

I don't have any bad impressions of Colin :)

wonderingaboutnames · 16/01/2012 23:31

Dh's dad died about 20 years ago so it's different - though the same in terms of commemorating a dead parent I suppose. In an ideal world we'd make Peter DS1's mn but I did suggest that at the time and DH said no, so...

I think the options will be Colin Peter or Something with Colin Peter as mn.

lollystix · 16/01/2012 23:06

I'm in Scotland and Colin is well used up here and I have positive associations - lots of lovely colins at my work - haven't met any little ones yet but like a previous poster said I think it's due a revival.

I do admit that when I was younger and lived in England I thought it was a seventies name like Keith etc, but since moving to Scotland my perception has changed (and Keith's a good name up here too but not as nice as Colin IMHO).

CandiceMariePratt · 16/01/2012 22:57

I love the name Colin

guinealady · 16/01/2012 22:48

Agree with Mysterious that your DH 'insisting' on both grandfathers names being used is a bit harsh, given the sad circumstances. Would his father be very offended if the child was given the name in memory of the other grandfather, or is he just being a bit silly about this?

Having said that, I think Peter Colin is a fine name as long as you are happy with Peter as a first name.

Unfortunately I know a Colin who is a real Colin Hunt type so it has put me off the name....but am sure there are some nice ones out there!
