After going round in circles quite a lot, DH and I have come back to the name Duncan.

previous thread

It had come up before in random reading out of names from book and DH said no , I wasn't sure as I know a fairly unpleasnant 'Dunc'. (Although I don't see him much.)

It's come up again and he's now quite keen.

it would be Duncan Allan .

a) what do you think
b) any similar suggestions?

Cheers :)

We are going with GP's names as middle names so wouldn't want them to have same name as Gran/Grandad :)

Have just been reminded of another Duncan which has further put me off it, sorry!

Because, Alan fades into nothing compared to the strapping, bonny name that is
DUNCAN
And Alan is pretty dated. I was at school with several Alans. I left in 1980.

Heatherhills · 17/01/2012 14:55

Why not Alan as a first name?

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 14:37

:)

This was a list I'd thought of from a previous thread if that helps. All no from DH though...

Ross Allan
Jacob Allan
Joseph Allan
Nicholas Allan
Elliot Allan

That's why you're here!

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 14:31

I didn't realise I was so picky blue Blush

Like Alastair/Alasdair but DH doesn't, one on that list is a v close relative and not sure about the rest. James was considered for a bit...

Like Malcolm but if you google 'Malcolm Allan'......Grin makes me think of meat!

Scottish names a nice idea but not stuck on them. DC1's name isn't and name for DC2 if girl isn't. (Not Duncanina Wink )

OP posts:
BlueChampagne · 17/01/2012 14:28

Alasdair
James
David
Glen
Seamus

Grin kreecher you urgently need some guinea pigs to name

kreecherlivesupstairs · 17/01/2012 14:17

I SIMPLY REFUSE TO HAVE IT AND WILL HAUNT THIS THREAD UNTIL THE OP CONFIRMS HER SON IS TO BE CALLED DUNCAN AND THAT'S THAT.

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 14:12

You might have to move away from the trad Scottish thing a wee bit.

How about:

Reuben
Hector
Malcolm (ok back to Scottish - Mal a good adult nn)
Rhodri
Nathaniel
Heath
Colm

Positiveplus · 17/01/2012 14:09

Euan
Gregor / Gregory
Finlay
Harris / Harrison

??

Above was to chesticles

Went to to school with a Murdo, no my cup of tea though. (or Mungo) Roderick ok but just not right!

Yup boy's names hard!

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 14:03

If it's ones I see every week it would just be weird to me to have one the same. :) Will ponder on Douglas....

OP posts:
TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 14:01

Mungo
Roderick (in order to get Roddy - brill nn)
Murdo

Douglas is not great...

Chesticles · 17/01/2012 13:55

Sorry, I find boys names really tricky, so that is about my list! My favourite is still Douglas though.

I wouldn't worry too much about already knowing children with the same name (unless it is close family). If you like a name, go for it. Otherwise you're restricting the pool of nice names a lot and finding a nice boy's name is tricky enough without any extra barriers!

RillaBlythe · 17/01/2012 13:54

Magnus.

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 13:50

Not keen on Struan, Angus, Keir (sorry I'm a fussy bugger), really like Murray but know a wee one of them too. :)

OP posts:
LylaNovacek · 17/01/2012 13:39

Struan
Murray
Angus
Keir

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 13:30

Any more Chesticles ? i like your thinking :)

OP posts:
snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 13:29

Would like to have Ross but DH not keen at all. Know a wee Fraser that I see all the time unfortunately!

Alexander is one of those ones that reminds me of annoying people too.

Will maybe work on Douglas as I am kind of talking myself out of Duncan (sorry Kreecher Wink )

OP posts:
Chesticles · 17/01/2012 13:16

Duncan is nice in a solid, manly sort of way, but I prefer Douglas. Could you not persuade your DH into it? Otherwise my suggestions would be Fraser,
Alexander (Sandy) or Ross which I thinkhave a similar flavour (apologies if already suggested, not read whole of previous thread)

snapcruncher · 17/01/2012 13:08

I work in a really nicknamey place, so I guess I'd expect people to shorten it whether I liked it or not IYSWIM.

percy

Graham?
Stuart?
Gordon?

That wee list has a cousin and a close family friend in it so I wouldn't want to use them. :) Gordon is an ok name but just not right.

OP posts:
Kveta · 17/01/2012 12:30

it's a great name so long as your surname isn't donut. I knew a few when I was at school, and never heard it shortened.
