After going round in circles quite a lot, DH and I have come back to the name Duncan.

previous thread

It had come up before in random reading out of names from book and DH said no , I wasn't sure as I know a fairly unpleasnant 'Dunc'. (Although I don't see him much.)

It's come up again and he's now quite keen.

it would be Duncan Allan .

a) what do you think
b) any similar suggestions?

Cheers :)

I love the name Duncan and so wanted to call one of my DC it. DH didn't like it though, I have three DSs and none of them are called Duncan Sad

Ross is a lovely name as well, was alo one that I loved but DH didn't.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 22/01/2012 10:45

I wish I had called one Duncan. DD is intolerable sometimes.
I give people NN based on their behaviour or appearance.

Bluestocking · 22/01/2012 10:29

Sorry, Kreecher. It's by no means the worst of the nicknames we give people purely on the basis of their names. If it makes you feel any better, I met an adorable PhD student called Duncan in the common room at work on Friday!

snapcruncher · 22/01/2012 10:25

i like Duncan as a cat name!

of course it could be a girl anyway. :)

Angry that's you off my xmas card list. Spunky dunky indeed.
I wanted to call one of our cats Duncan. DD vetoed it and they have ridiculous names now.

Bluestocking · 22/01/2012 10:17

I quite like it, and have known some nice ones, but my sisters and I always refer to anyone called Duncan as Spunky Dunky. That may just be us though ...

snapcruncher · 22/01/2012 10:12

Tbh it could change as we're not both desperate to have a wee Ross but it's the only one we've both considered so far.

if i get a goldfish I'll call it Duncan. Wink

Noooooooooo. Ross is ghastly. Apologies to any mothers of Ross'. Duncan has it all.

snapcruncher · 22/01/2012 10:02

thanks all.

unless we think of something else (or kreecher finds out where we live :) ) it looks like we're going with Ross... for now...

kreecherlivesupstairs · 21/01/2012 10:16

I've missed a couple of pages out, but am back to prod you into the Duncan corale Grin

whenskiesaregrey · 21/01/2012 10:05

As an Evertonian, I say there are not enough Duncan's in this world,.go for it!!!

snapcruncher · 21/01/2012 07:01

i see what you mean. :)

i suppose it won't be said all together too often.

hmm.

nooka · 21/01/2012 06:46

I guess they just blend a bit too much for me becoming a bit 'Rossallan' if you see what I mean. That might just be me of course :)

snapcruncher · 21/01/2012 06:41

i did think Andrew Allan a bit of a mouthful.

OP posts:
snapcruncher · 21/01/2012 06:41

it's a two syllable surname and the initials don't make a rude word or anything either. Grin

it sounds alright all together in my head, but i may be going nuts thinking too hard about this!

OP posts:
nooka · 21/01/2012 06:36

I don't think I'd choose Ross with Allan as a middle name. Or Andrew for that matter. Of course it depends on the surname as you tend to only use the middle name when you are saying the whole name.

snapcruncher · 21/01/2012 06:32

Duncan and Douglas seem to both have been vetoed currently.

am a bit Meh about Andrew for some reason.

is Ross really bad for some reason?

it went round in my head for a good few weeks, I think because it seemed to me to suit middle name/surname and strangely sounded quite nice with dc1's name. (not bothered about 'matching' names though!) i think it also isn't used too often which i quite liked.

DH in the huff cos I don't really like any of his suggestions either!

time to read entire name book again and surf random web sites...

You cannot go wrong with Duncan. Or Douglas. Both go well with Allan as a middle name.

I know a 17 yr old Duncan and he's a good advertisement for Duncans.

Beamur · 18/01/2012 19:44

I love Duncan as a name.
James is a perpetual classic.

ilovesprouts · 18/01/2012 19:40

a pal of mine has a duncan james it really suits him

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 15:57

Oh NO not Ross. Please.

BlueChampagne · 17/01/2012 15:45

Think you're going to have to have another go at Ross then. I like it. Unless you like Andrew?

ArielNonBio · 17/01/2012 15:29

From knowing no Duncans all my life, I now know three (one of whom I know very, very well Grin). They're all the same age (36) and they're all teachers. Weird.

I wouldn't have said I was a massive fan of the name before. But it is a good strong, dependable name. Not faddy or wishywashy.

Labootin · 17/01/2012 15:27

Splutter at rubber johnny.. That brings back errrr fond memories....
