Is Jasper a fairly mainstream name and what are your thoughts? How many Jaspers do you know? We are looking for a name that is known and not too unusual but at the same time, not overly common. Any opinions welcome. Ta.

Check out the names of all the babies born in 2010 here: www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-reference-tables.html?edition=tcm%3A77-225089

It will tell you how many Jaspers there were and how Jasper ranks compared to other names.

I love it, if our baby is a boy it will be called Jasper (finding out sex on Wednesday). We know one Jasper who is about 70. We heard his name being called when I was about 8 weeks pregnant and dh and I just looked at each other and knew it was the name. It's unusual as in you don't know many but it's a normal sort of name if you know what I mean and easy to spell.

missimills · 16/01/2012 19:11

I know 2 Jaspers. 4 and 34!

Littlecherublegs · 16/01/2012 18:26

Not a fan of Jasper at all, sorry! Just find it a bit... wet.
Maybe thats because the 1 adult I know called Jasper is a bit of a wet lettuce; really scrawny, not very masculine, no 'umph' about him (and wears an earring, oddly?!)

Also, we used to have a budgie called Jasper.

i know 2 baby Jaspers.
it's not a name I particularly like tbh, but I think it's becoming more popular

ReneeVivien · 16/01/2012 17:53

I know one 7yo.

Nellabutterfly · 16/01/2012 17:47

I know a (very) little Jasper, the son of a friend, otherwise I'd consider using it myself. Mostly associate it with Jasper Fforde, author of the excellent Thursday Next books? Like it a lot.

Ihatepeas · 16/01/2012 17:42

I know one grown up jasper in his 40s ( a lawyer) no little jaspers. I lke it, unusual but not silly.

whoknowsme · 16/01/2012 15:44

Wow, what a great name.

Wish I had thought of it for one of mine !

Stuff "Is it unusual ?" though.

2 TESTS FOR A BOYS NAME....

A) Do you like it

B) Do you think you could snog a Jasper, if so you are not blighting his future prospects with the use of a name.

Bicnod · 16/01/2012 15:32

I think it's a lovely name but couldn't use it as it's what we used to call wasps when I was at school Hmm

TheParanoidAndroid · 16/01/2012 15:29

dog name

TimothyClaypoleLover · 16/01/2012 15:28

I know 3 small jaspers, one adult jaspers and 2 dog jaspers!

littlepie · 16/01/2012 15:26

It was our cat's name. Sadly this rules it out of being DC name but I do like it. (He was a great cat-very wise).

missmiss · 16/01/2012 11:40

I know a few small Jasperd. It's a great name!

ValarMorghulis · 16/01/2012 11:24

think it is likely to make a resurgence since the Twilight books/films

Figgyrolls · 16/01/2012 11:23

I know two adult ones, 1 is academic and gentle whilst being very good looking and a lot of fun, the other is a big beefy fellow who is sporty and drinky and a lot of fun. Love the name.

higgle · 16/01/2012 11:20

I know lots of dogs called Jasper but no people! I'm afraid my views of the name are somewhat coloured by one smelly and grumpy cocker spaniel.

guinealady · 16/01/2012 11:19

I've only known, or known of, Jaspers who had four legs and a waggy tail. Not sure I've ever met a human one...it is a rather nice name, though.

3boysgirlontheway · 16/01/2012 11:15

I know of one, but, don't know him personally. It is a lovely name, unusual without being wacky!

Jakeyblueblue · 16/01/2012 09:56

My dh wanted to call DS jasper but I didnt really like it. It has since grown on me though and I might consider it if I ever have another boy!

SoFarWeAreEqual · 16/01/2012 09:49

I know one boy called Jasper - he is seven. I agree with NoMoreMarbles - it's unusual but not in a bizarre celeb sort of way. I think it is really cute.

AntsMarching · 16/01/2012 09:09

Jasper was my grandfather's name, but everyone called him Jack. Only one I've ever known.

mrswoodentop · 16/01/2012 09:05

I know one adult Jasper who is a doctor, but have to say I know St least three cats called Jasper

nooka · 16/01/2012 01:46

There is one in Twilight which might bump the popularity, but not as much as Jacob/Edward/Bella.

theverysuccessfulone · 16/01/2012 01:43

know one under 2yo. I've a feeling it will be popular soon
