Ok, OH and i were set on this name until about 7 months when i discovered that in some parts of the country it's commonly used as a nickname for girl's private parts!

So we changed our mind and now have a longer name which could be abbreviated to Minnie, Mia or Mina. We both still like Minnie the best but i wanted to ask if you have ever heard of Minnie as a nickname used in the playground for girly bits and if so where you are based?

I think i'm right in thinking it's mainly used as a nickname in the South and South West so we may get away with using it at home up North.

I just checked with my ds. He looked at me in a long suffering way and said "you're on mumsnet, aren't you? You asked me that last time someone silly was going to call their kid Minnie. she would ne so teased. It would be horrible. And that's what I said last time too."

libelulle · 17/01/2012 18:15

here too, sorry (south east). You'd be insane to use it. I had a friend as a child called Fanny (fairly common 70s french name) and it was grim for her!

susiedaisy · 17/01/2012 18:11

Meant to say I'm from the west country

susiedaisy · 17/01/2012 18:10

Minnie moo is used to describe ladies bits, in my neck of the woodsGrin

comedaygoday · 17/01/2012 18:08

Good point Seeker. I have pre-school boys and we have encouraged them to use correct terms for body parts rather than euphemisms. I have honestly never heard friends' older children or nephews and neices use Minnie in that way though. On reflection OP I think calling your DD Minnie is too risky. You would probably get away with it, but if you didn't it would be grim for her.

picnicbasketcase · 17/01/2012 17:47

I used to know someone who would snigger if she heard anyone talk about Mini cars. 'She's got a red Mini' etc, because of the vagine connection.

seeker · 17/01/2012 17:46

Comedaygodqy- how old were your children when you lived in all those places?

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 17/01/2012 17:44

Odd Cwtch - I'm from south wales and it's the term we used!

I'd avoid it - sadly, as it's lovely.

comedaygoday · 17/01/2012 17:02

Currently living in West Midlands, before that lived in East Midlands, before that in North West anf before that in South West and I have only ever heard Minnie used as a term for female parts on this board. I not sure it's that common IRL , after all, it's not as if you are planning to call your DD Fanny.

seeker · 16/01/2012 19:53

Why would you call your little girl something that will make her classmates snigger? It's just so incredibly egocentric and selfish- " I like it so I am going to use it, and to hell with the consequences"

CountryMama · 16/01/2012 19:30

I love this name! please use it!

AThingInYourLife · 16/01/2012 04:04

I've never heard of Minnie = fanjo

I know two little girls called Minnie with parents from different parts of the UK.

doinmummy · 16/01/2012 00:53

Minnie is widely used here in the SE. I would def avoid it

Cwtchbach · 15/01/2012 23:52

I've never heard it used to describe genitalia. I'm in Wales.

pictish · 15/01/2012 23:12

Ok- it's cute. So that makes it ok to give your child a name that will make 90% of people under the age of 10 giggle whenever you introduce yourself?

KateShmate · 15/01/2012 18:51

I think its a cute name!
It wasn't until I came on MN that I realized 'Daisy', 'Penny' and quite a few other girls names are another name for your lady bits!
I know 'Flower' isn't exactly a common girls name, but is a common 'ladybits' name!

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 15/01/2012 18:36

Yes, when I was at school, your Minnie was your lady bits.

seeker · 15/01/2012 18:36

Universal here in Kent.

patsdeadfrank · 15/01/2012 18:28

vagina, yep. horrible name for vagina but yep. there was a thread on here a couple of days ago about this.
