Dh and I quite like Ruby if we have a girl.

What does everyone think of it? Is it a bit too popular at the moment?

We currently have a Dylan and a Miles..

I love the name Ruby.... but don't know ANY Rubys around this way. I say GO for it!

3boysgirlontheway · 13/01/2012 14:06

I love it. If I wasn't convinced that DD will have red hair I could be considering it :)

GoldenDaffodil · 13/01/2012 13:43

I've got a baby name app (British app called baby namer) and it lists it as number 2.

P.S Dalrymps in answer to your question yesterday I'm 13 weeks.

Dalrymps · 13/01/2012 13:24

I keep searching for lists but so far I haven't found one where Ruby is at the top. The only list I can find is the national statistics one and it has Ruby at number 17.

Does anyone know which is the 'official' list?

I like the name Ruby but a colleague called her baby Ruby Imogen and calls her Roobs for short which I think sounds awful. But if popularity is an issue she is the only one I know so not too many :)

ShesAStar · 13/01/2012 11:53

I'm pregnant with a girl at the moment and my husband loves the name Ruby beyond all other names. DH's grandmother was called Ruby but I feel at the moment it is a bit too popular - having said that I don't know any, but it is at the top of the 100 most popular names list for 2010. We have compromised and used it as a middle name.

Dalrymps · 13/01/2012 09:49

Interesting points about popularity...

I thought it was in the top 100 but when I look it doesn't seem to be. Does anyone have a link to where it is in 'the list'?

I thought ds1 had a slightly unusual name, certainly not that popular but once we had him I realised I hadn't really done my research as there seems to be quite a few other Dylan's around here. Thankfully they all seem to be spelt different.

I know it doesn't really matter. I just don't want it to be a name that there are loads and loads of iyswim. One or two others I could cope with.

I have an Isabel after being warned off by everyone as it was so popular when she was born. Four years on and she is the only one with her name in all her kindy classes, so go figure.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/01/2012 07:30

Don't do it. I've got a Ruby and wish I had an Ellen.
DD loves her name though and, there are only two of them at her school.

hugebump3 · 13/01/2012 07:19

No, it doesn't stop becoming an issue when you leave school imo. Having a very widely used name can be a pain in the xx at any stage in life. In our office we have 4 Sarahs... Can get a little confusing Smile

xxcozxx · 13/01/2012 01:32

i find popularity misleading. you may choose an exceedingly unpopular name and have a duplicate in your local school or choose a popular name and be unique?...what does it matter once dc leaves school? anyhow, if you LOVE the name i feel thats all that matters :) no need to choose a less loved name purely as it MAY be less used

Dalrymps · 12/01/2012 23:56

Ah wow, hey GoldenSmile! Going ok ta, 19 weeks now.. Congratulations! How far along are you?

I like it, I only know one Ruby, well except my dog but as I thought I was infertile I used up one of our favourite baby names on her!

Dalrymps · 12/01/2012 20:12

Dalrymps · 12/01/2012 20:12

Well I feel a little uneasy with it being so popular bit then I really do like itConfused

maydaychild · 12/01/2012 19:05

I know at least two Ruby's of every age from 0-5

I would say its still on the up in the popularity stakes.
It's a nice name if you are happy with the sheer quantity there will be!
A modern day Helen or Clare !

RubyLovesMayMay · 12/01/2012 18:59

It was DH's nickname for me when we first got together. So we decided to make it DD's middle name.
