Want Sam for a girl, is it short for anything apart from Samantha?

Pregnant with DC4, gave away all my baby name books as we were stopping at 3 but... I love Sam for a girl or boy but don't like Samantha, can it be short for anything else? If I have a boy it would be Sam short for Samuel but cannot think of girls names that get shortened to Sam except Samantha.
Any suggestions?

This probably isn't helpful but I love the name Samantha, my friends daughter is Samantha Anne and gets called Samianne, so cute.

'tis also Thai for three.

startail · 13/01/2012 14:29

You need a M surname. Then you can have Sophie Anne or whatever.
Mind you the girl I knew with those initials exploded if you called her Sam.

Samuela. Italian.

Samaire - there is an actress called Samaire Armstrong. It's pronounced Sameera. Quite pretty...

Samara is a beautiful name, heard it from samara weaving, stunning actress of home and away fame, thought basically nobody over here would know her name so its almost totally unique :) trying to think of other similar names...cant think?

hels71 · 12/01/2012 21:32

cookielove · 12/01/2012 20:00

Another alternative for a boy name is Samwell, i realise you want girl names but i thought i would offer it up Smile

Samera

guinealady · 12/01/2012 19:57

Not seriously suggesting this, but when I was a kid I invented a name for a character in a story I was writing: Samella, nicknamed Sammie.

Not sure it's really that good a name, but I was v proud at the time that I had 'invented' this name all by myself!

tethersend · 12/01/2012 19:57

I like Samara, I don't think many people would think of The Ring connection.

On Waterloo Road there was Sambuca Grin

My DS is called Sam - not short for anything, he is just Sam. I loved the name and didn't need it to be short for anything.

meala · 12/01/2012 19:05

I read a lot of the chalet school books when I was younger and one of the characters is Samaris.
