Does this name suit an adult?

Molly. I have heard a few people say that although they think it's a nice name, it's not suitable for an adult.

I understand what they're saying but surely no one has actually gone up to Molly Ringwald and told her that she doesn't suit her name. Don't people just become their names? What is everyone's opinion?

OP posts:

Annie seems fine for an adult, with the added advantage of not having the alternate Ann/Anne spelling.

shoobidoo · 10/01/2012 13:59

sorry, Eleonora

shoobidoo · 10/01/2012 13:59

Another one here who finds Molly (along with Poppy, Tilly, Ellie etc) not very elegant. I much prefer longer names (e.g. Margaret, Magdalena, Eloenora, Elisabeth) - they are more feminine and elegant to my ears.

But thankfully we all have different tastes - would be very dull if we all chose the same names Smile.

flopsy1974 · 10/01/2012 13:53

I'm having the same issues with Annie. I absolutely adore Annie but not sure if it is a strong enough name for an adult. Anna and Ann which seem so much more grown up just don't do it for me.

Mollie is a nice name btw Smile

BeattieBow · 10/01/2012 13:44

all of these names will work fine on grown ups ime - when she is grown up there'll be a whole generation of girls called Ellie, Poppy, Daisy, Lily, Milly, Maisie, etc etc and it will be the norm then. (the mumsnetters of the future will be asking this question about a whole different set of names I think!).

TaraPalmerCocaCola · 10/01/2012 13:36

I know an old lady who is abit mad but lovely and she's called Molly. So yes it does suit an adult imo!Smile

Hulababy · 10/01/2012 13:34

Of course it sounds fine for an adult.
It isn't a new name!
I have known of a number of adults called Mollie/Molly and all have managed perfectly with their name.
Have known of adults in high positions at work too with the name, so not even going to be a hindrance in that way.

FWIW my DD is called Mollie and I love her name, it suits her immensly, and it will grow with her.

CecilyP · 10/01/2012 13:31

It just sounds like a child's name because it became very popular quite suddenly after previously being unusual - so it will grow up with the children. I only know one Molly who is now in her 60s so it has always been an adult name to me.

Floggingmolly · 10/01/2012 13:24

It's either a toddler or little girl name (under ten), or an old lady name. It's the bit in the middle where it doesn't work!

diddl · 10/01/2012 13:20

I think it´s fine for an adult.

In actual fact I think of it as an old ladies name along with Maisie & Phoebe.

Fo0ffyShmo0ffer · 10/01/2012 13:07

I think Molly is lovely on a child or an adult. Perfectly pretty. Acceptable at any age. It's the Lola/ Gigi type names I can't stand.

Bellstar · 10/01/2012 13:04

I love the name molly but didnt use it for dd as mil went on and on about how she knew a molly and couldnt stand her. Wish I hadnt listened to herAngry
I know 2 mollies-both old ladies. Its a beautiful name.

Ephiny · 10/01/2012 13:00

I guess it's no worse than names like Holly or Sally which are considered perfectly normal for adults. Though I wouldn't choose those either personally, not the most elegant names IMO.

CinnamonStar · 10/01/2012 12:55

Would you be happy to be called Molly?

I wouldn't want to give my children a name I wouldn't be happy and proud to bear myself.

I don't think I'd be that thrilled to be called Molly, but it is OK.

OhTheConfusion · 10/01/2012 12:45

A lot of friends/family have all recently had babies (such an expensive time!).

Between us there is Poppy, Lucy, Matilda, Evie, Mia, Oscar, Alice, James and Freddy, Harry, Lucas and Molly!

For me there are only a few of these names that will work well on grown up's... Molly is one of them!

Ephiny · 10/01/2012 12:34

It's a little bit cutesy as the full name for an adult, not the worst by a long way though. If you love the name, I wouldn't worry about it.

wahwahwah · 10/01/2012 12:30

Molly Weir. Ahhhhhhh.

shouldnotbehere · 10/01/2012 12:29

I know an Amelia, who has always been Milly. She uses the name Milly on all business cards and email address etc. at work. She has a phD, and her job is linked to conservation. The name works perfectly.

I also know a Daisy, who works as a nurse.

A name I don't like on an adult is Lola.

marshkat · 10/01/2012 12:19

my nan is a molly at 93 and i have a cousin molly at 3, also now a molly at 17! suits them all. your child will make her name suit her. she could even use mo for her older years! im sure she will have a nn at some point anyway.

toobreathless · 10/01/2012 12:18

I really like Molly & think it works well for a child or an adult.

I also dislike what I call 'itsy bitsy' names: Maisie, Poppy. Archie, Alfie etc I am a professional & at present, would struggle to take another professional with one of these names seriously. Different once you get to know them & in twenty years when these children have grown up it may be the norm.

woollylamb · 10/01/2012 12:12

My nephew's girlfriend is a Molly, in her 20s, in a professional job - definitely ok for adults I think.

Like Kerala, I think Poppy, Daisy, Milly do not pass the adult/professional test.

TheOddsAreEven · 10/01/2012 12:08

You have great taste in names! my dd is called Molly I think its a beautiful name

NoMoreInsomnia12 · 10/01/2012 12:07

I would only hesitate on the basis that it could be the sort of name given to a dog or cat. Less so than some others perhaps though. I had to avoid Holly, Millie, Oscar and Cindy for those reasons anyway! :)

Figgygal · 10/01/2012 12:02

What tosh (not you OP but the notion) DH gran was another Molly and my niece is 7 months and a Molly how can a name just be for a baby or LO??

shouldnotbehere · 10/01/2012 12:01

Molly is suited to an adult. I have a friend called Molly, and it's fine.
