Would you, could you?

Love how it rolls off the tongue and have known one in RL so it doesn't seem so out there...but is it too associated with Ricky Gervais (who I can't stand)?

Opinions please (with reasons, not just 'I like it', 'I don't like it' etc., thank you).

P.S. for a boy, just to clarify!

Well, it wouldn't be my choice. It sounds pretty wet. Sorry.

rachel234 · 09/01/2012 15:39

I've never heard it before, but just googled it and it seems to be an old Celtic name. How do you pronounce it?

seeker · 09/01/2012 15:40

No. Because I wouldn't want to be called it. Even if I were a boy.

lisaro · 09/01/2012 15:41

Wouldn't and couldn't. Awful.

If you live in the UK I'm not sure you could get away from the Ricky Gervais comments (although by the time he's in school I doubt the kids would know who that was!).

If you love it, go for it, as names do just tend to 'become' on the child for the people who know it and love it, and other associations fade away (it's just the judgey school-gate mums and colleagues etc. who might be a bit more tricky)

greenmoo · 09/01/2012 18:35

Sorry, pronounced 'jerr-vace', with the emphasis on 'vace', like Ricky Gervais.

Another sort of famous Gervase is Gervase Phinn, the guy who has written a bunch of James Herriot-style books about his time as a schools inspector in Yorkshire.

Gervase Phinn was my first thought too.

DesertOrchid · 09/01/2012 22:00

Hands that do dishes can be soft as Gervase?

I think it's too 'long' a sound for a modern name - although I think you could get away with it as a BC name with 'Gerry' as a nn.

Bellabellaaa · 13/01/2012 21:24

I really like it. Sounds a strong and unusual name to me. and as one of the other posters said could shorten it to Gerry which I also like (but not keen on Gerald).

Bellabellaaa · 13/01/2012 21:27

By the way, advice not to name your child due to some minor 'celeb' of the day, should be ignored.... you will regret it, minor celebs are irrelevant, go for the name you love.

Onion1968 · 14/01/2012 22:29

My initial thoughts are that it's a bit poncey. So I wouldn't and couldn't.
