To think this name is actually quite cool?

DD's first day back at pre-school today and there was a new little boy called Van/Vann (not sure on spelling). At first I was a bit Hmm but the more I thought about it the more I liked it, I think it is actually quite a nice name - sounds good with a nice surname too.
Friend whose DC's go to pre-school was gobsmacked and whispered, once outside the gates, 'Why not just call him Truck or Lorry?'

Not even pregnant, but think it will be going on my 'boys name list' that I mentally store Grin

Aryan is a pretty common Indian boys name. I know 2 of them. I know it slightly shocked our US office too. I don't know what they expected but I know it wasn't a short 35 year old Asian guy

WhatstheScenario · 07/01/2012 12:05

I like it!

PercyFilth · 07/01/2012 12:03

Van is a Vietnamese boys' name.

rachel234 · 07/01/2012 11:27

I know a Van, short for Donovan, I think. Everyone calls him Van though and it suits him.

3boysgirlontheway · 07/01/2012 10:47

I like it, there was a character on a TV show in New Zealand called Van West, he had a twin brother Jethro (both played by the same actor) and both names went on my boys list!

EverSoLagom · 07/01/2012 08:58

I had a mate at uni called Laurie Carr. Didn't seem to bother him.

(waves at Lorry if he is by any chance a mumsnetter...)

I like Van, Vann, Ivan and Vaughn very much.

nooka · 07/01/2012 02:53

ds has a friend called Vaughn, pronounced Von. I guess it's in a similar vein. i have a friend called Lori, but then we live in North America where there are no vans or lorries, just different sized trucks. I think that they are both quite English terms.

I love it Grin. And my name for the DD I'll never have is also Ivy perplexedpirate.

MrsHoarder · 06/01/2012 20:57

I knew an (adult) Vann as a child: very much not a rocker or middle class and it was fine as a name.

rhondajean · 06/01/2012 20:53

I have Hunter for rthe imaginary boy child I will never have.

No more girls names!

minouminou · 06/01/2012 20:51

There's a boy at DS' school called Aryan - I did a double take at the name until I realised from the surname that they're Indian and so most likely it's not what it seems!

I'm sure DS' name has also raised a few eyebrows, but people soon get used to names and that's the end of it.

KateShmate · 06/01/2012 20:50

FlightRisk hahaha - its silly really, we already have 5 DD's and pretty sure we aren't going to have another - but if I somehow got pregnant, I know what we'd call it already!
P.s Fallon is gorgeous!

Catspee Im the same - I cant stop thinking about it now and how much I actually really like it.

Ivan nn Van has slam dunked into my imaginary boys names number one slot.
I love it!
Girl's number one has been Ivy for ages.
Figures. :)

marriedinwhite · 06/01/2012 20:46

I think I have heard Scandinavian au-pairs refer to boys called Van. I quite like it. Have heard far worse, anyone remember: Brooklyn and Romeo?

southeastastra · 06/01/2012 20:44

don't like it myself - reminds me of an old boss Grin

troisgarcons · 06/01/2012 20:42

Van is a Hebrew name - we usually extend it to Evan or ian

minouminou · 06/01/2012 20:38

I like it.
I hope his surname is der Graaf generator.......

No, I do like it. I reckon it's short for summink, though.

Dysgu · 06/01/2012 20:38

I love it! I had a colleague when I taught in the USA who had a son called Van. AFAIK, that was/is his 'real' name.

Had one of the DDs arrived as a DS, our top boy's name was Evan (after my DM's dad) and would have had nn of Van.

Smellslikecatspee · 06/01/2012 20:26

Read this earlier, wandered of to do the stuff you have to of an evening, but I have to say the more I've thought about it the more I like it.

Short snappy, fit any walk of life I really really like it Grin

FlightRisk · 06/01/2012 20:25

hahahaha not preganat but have a boys name list

I do this, don't really want any more children but I have Fallon for a girl and Sawyer for a boy on my list. (Just in case)

mrsmaltesers · 06/01/2012 20:23

Love that name. Also love Diesel, who my son had swimming lessons with once.
