Well I have an Honor so clearly I think that's an ace name Wink

What about Gloria or Verity?

4madboys · 05/01/2012 22:08

i liked Felicity or Violet as names but dp didnt Hmm and also dd was almost genevieve, before she became merryn :)

patsdeadfrank · 05/01/2012 22:05

I like stronger names... To me most of th list sounds like a gust of wind.

Are you suffering from having chosen your best names already? E.g Hope is a step down from Faith in terms of strength of sentiment. Glory Vs Grace ... Glory sounds like the brash townie cousin. Celeste is an angel like Gabriel - y'know - the less famous one.

I'm only being mean because your list is long - hope I'm not rubishing your faves!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/01/2012 21:19

Love Maeve too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/01/2012 21:17

For me Constance [nn Connie] is way out in front though I like Merryn,Joy and Seren too.

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 05/01/2012 18:33

Merryn or Seren

patsdeadfrank · 05/01/2012 18:31

its about 1% of irish people speak it, so not dead exactly. but in the irish constitution its listed as the official language of ireland with english as second. you learn something new everyday.

OP posts:
patsdeadfrank · 05/01/2012 18:19

Grin na dead lahguage is the wrong term but i know a lot of school kids that wish it was.

i am being unfair as they have gaelic tv shows and radio shows.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 05/01/2012 18:10

"especially since its a dead language " Is it?

Pretty much everyone knows that Niamh is pronounced Neeve.

Littlecherublegs · 05/01/2012 18:10

From your list I like:
Ava
Beth (could be Bethan?)
Merryn
Seren

patsdeadfrank · 05/01/2012 18:06

you have a valid point, but a lot of cultures/languages have different spellings for names i see no reason why this should not be different especially since its a dead language and it makes the spelling easier.

OP posts:
WhatstheScenario · 05/01/2012 17:57

But they DO sound like they are spelled - in GAELIC Grin

Fair enough, but I have to be honest Neve/Neave/Neev etc just make me think the parents cant spell.

Maeve (Modern Irish not Maebh [grin})?

patsdeadfrank · 05/01/2012 17:56

hahaha i'm irish and i loath the way that irish names dont sound anything like they way they are spelt so it would be neve if we went with that.

OP posts:
WhatstheScenario · 05/01/2012 17:53

Love: Celeste, Evangeline, Joy and Seren.

Like: Constance, Hope, Mercy, Merry, Liliana

Strongly dislike: Neve - NO, its Niamh! This is a horrible, horrible anglicisation of a beautiful Gaelic name, sorry!
Dawn - still dated and frumpy imo
Merryn - not nice, although agree Merry is a pretty nickname
Noelle - just dislike it, dont know why. I think its because I hate the boy's name Noel.
Harmony/Glory - Jordan type baby names. NO>

Meh: Beth (dull), Ava (over-used now), Honor (bit fashion-ey), Lorna (a bit prim and proper)

patsdeadfrank · 05/01/2012 15:55

i have noted the get away with any thing rule in brighton and feel bad for the young ibforce i met the other day Grin

oikopolis · 05/01/2012 15:40

I like these:

Ava
Celeste
Constance
Evangeline
Honor
Hope
Mercy
Seren

4madboys · 05/01/2012 14:29

cant be that popular there were only 30 of them registered in the whole of the uk in 2010 when dd was born, maybe its just your area? funny how names vary by popularity in area.

the only other merryn we know is a boy spelt merin.

tummytickler · 05/01/2012 14:21

patsdead I am Brighton too (well, just outside). This means you can get away with anything, which is good.
I adore Glory (on our list for mn) and Joy.
Evangeline is my 6 year olds mn, like Genie as a nn for this.
Lorna is also nice. Constance is lovely, but I hat Connie.
Not keen on the others though.
I know a couple of Merryns. It seems to be picking up speed in the popularity stakes lately.
I think Grace, Faith, Gabriel and Evangeline work perfectly. So that is my choice.

patsdeadfrank · 05/01/2012 13:10

oh meredith thats nice....... we are suppose to be making it smaller not bigger blue!!!

OP posts:
4madboys · 05/01/2012 13:10

oh yes meredith was also on our list but dp vetoed it! its lovely :)

BlueChampagne · 05/01/2012 13:07

I'd vote for Merryn, but would slip in the suggestion of Meredith as well.
