So do we reckon that Mary, Edith and Sybil are going to have a resurgence then?

DD is nearly 2 1/2 - she's Edith (known as "Edie").... I know of another Edith who is 3 1/2 so it's not uncommon at the moment - as has been said, it fits with the "old lady name" trend. (Mind you, I have an old lady name and was teased at school in the 80s - it's quite popular for little girls now.) Am most annoyed though that the Downton Edith is so awkward/plain. (But have only watched series 1 - perhaps she cheers up a bit and is more fun in series 2.)

D'you think Hilda, Gladys or Hazel will ever come back into fashion?

3boysgirlontheway · 06/01/2012 10:38

ceebie I will have to wait until one of my friends buys season 2 boxset, I am too mean to go and purchase myself Smile

sybilsmum · 06/01/2012 09:54

Namechanged for this as not to out myself, but we called our daughter Sybil more than 10 years ago and we know another one, slightly older, as well. We get a lot of positive comments but took the grandparents a while to get used to it.

FellatioNelson · 06/01/2012 04:48

I love Edith and Sybil very much, and Mary is really growing on me too. Anna has never really fallen out of favour I don't think - a true classic but never trendy, so I don't think it will take off particularly.

Cora is quite nice, but I am really, really struggling with Ethel. I suppose now Lily's baby is called Ethel it will seep into our concsciousness and we will learn to like it again.

But please God, no Enids, Ednas, Gertrudes or Hildas. Just NO.

In fact Enid is surely the ugliest old-lady name of all. Strange how Edith is so beautiful and elegant, yet Ethel and Enid are not.Confused

I know a girl called Isis (she's about 9) I think that will take off now, if it hadn't already. It's lovely.

NoHunIntended · 06/01/2012 02:16

I have a Downton name - Abbey! :) (Though I spell it Abi!)

Ponders · 06/01/2012 00:06

I was named for my aunt, who was born around 1916 so prime Downton time?

She was called Sybil Annie Mary

I got one of those but I'm not saying which one Grin

reelingintheyears · 05/01/2012 22:54

Sybil is hideous.

I agree that Edith and Mary have already made a comeback.I can't see it with Sybil and Cora.

sam26oscar · 05/01/2012 21:24

Love the name Violet and know a 3yo with it, love the name Cora too, however the name we use for ladies bits is Mary so that was a no no in my house Grin.

fivegomadindorset · 05/01/2012 21:15

DD is Edith, she is nearly 6, I have a friend who has an Edith and a Mary.

FannyBazaar · 05/01/2012 21:13

My cat's called Sybil (or Sybille as she likes to I spell it). If I had a girl, I think Violet was on the list.

sneezecakesmum · 05/01/2012 21:07

I've met a baby Edith. And my elderly mothers name was Edith..so definitely a golden oldie I would love to see back Smile

CharlieBoo · 05/01/2012 20:51

Violet, Daisy, Mary and Cora, all beautiful names.

PigeonPair · 05/01/2012 20:49

My niece (3 and a half) is a Mary and she is gorgeous!

mathanxiety · 05/01/2012 19:38

I think Cora is already well on its way to top 100. DA doesn't hurt, but it's a name that has been an up and comer for a few years now.

I love Sybil (Sybille and Sybilla too), Edith and Mary, but Cora will forever be middle aged Irish ladies to me. Violet has connotations of 'shrinking' for me, and I usually misread it as 'violent', conversely..

I prefer Letitia to Lavinia.

cyb · 05/01/2012 19:33

I think Sybil is a delightful name

MustControlFistOfDeath · 05/01/2012 19:33

You made that up! Shock

MustControlFistOfDeath · 05/01/2012 19:32

ceebie Shock O'Brien has a first name?! Shock

Bonsoir · 05/01/2012 19:29

I like the French spelling Sybille

Mirage · 05/01/2012 19:29

I knew a Sybilla years ago. She'd be a teenager now.

Staceisace · 05/01/2012 19:26

Good lord...I hope Sybil doesn't become popular!

Bonsoir · 05/01/2012 19:26

Blush Sorry mamasin!

MsBazinga · 05/01/2012 19:25

I love the name Isobel - think it's really beautiful. I had an aunt Sybil and only after her death discovered it was short for Isobel!

I have a Downton name and have always hated it but it's quite well-liked on MN.
