....Polly?

(Happy New Year BTW)

I've come to love this recently... it's cute for a baby but (I think) also ages well. I'm not keen on the name Mary and like Polly in its own right. Is it a bit too nicknamey? Also really like Penelope - at a stretch could name be Penelope with nn Polly?

Be as brutal as you like :)
TIA :)

Not a fan Im afraid, sorry.

Just makes me think or 'parrot' or 'put the kettle on'... ??!

Think a nn for Penelope would always end up as Pen / Penny too.

hellsbells4 · 02/01/2012 12:22

I prefer penelope to polly - but I think polly could be a nn for a penelope.

guinealady · 02/01/2012 12:58

I think of Polly as a nn for Pauline, not Penelope. The only Polly I've ever known was just a plain Polly with no longer name, though.

Polly was also my favourite doll as a child so I'd never give the name to a baby - to me it's always a doll's name!

MrsBovary · 02/01/2012 13:14

I prefer plain Polly, and like it. Penelope is great too, but prefer Nell or Penny as nick names. Though have heard of Poppy being used as a nick name too.

LaFilleSurLePont · 02/01/2012 13:44

I love Penelope, especially the nickname,Penny, but think Polly is horrid.

AgnesBligg · 02/01/2012 13:48

I absolutely adore Polly. I would use it as is not as nn. Plenty of little girls are Molly why not Polly.

jaffacakehips · 02/01/2012 13:50

Not a fan..I've met several Polly's under 1 in the last year, I think it's becoming more popular.

3boysgirlontheway · 02/01/2012 15:23

I think it is lovely, it is totally the style of name that I like!

spottyscarf · 02/01/2012 15:35

Love it! But then I have a 3yo Polly Grin. She is Polly Jean.

Never met another one and people often comment on it. And she loves singing Polly put the kettle on!

I've always thought of it as a cute name for a little girl that still sounds 'grown up' enough to age well- maybe that's just because I only know of adult Pollys, and she was named after PJ Harvey the singer, who is definitely not cutesy!

Only downside is people always, always call her Poppy or Holly.

I love Polly. I know a couple including my gorgeous cousin who the name still suits as an adult.

BandOMothers · 02/01/2012 16:54

Gorgous and I like Poll too if it got shortened. And lol at Spotty!

AmandaWJ · 02/01/2012 17:34

Polly is lovely, definitely a great name in its own right :)

Not such a fan of Penelope though, sounds a bit la-di-da to me for some reason!

coronet · 02/01/2012 18:09

It's not my sort of name precisely because it is nicknamey. But I know a little Polly and also met an adult one the other day - her name didn't strike me as little girly at all. If you love it, go for it.

Polkadotfanatic · 02/01/2012 18:50

Wow, a much greater reception than I thought. Thanks to all that answered. I am thinking middle name of Alice? Surname starts with G so want to avoid PUG POG and definitely PIG acronyms.

I don't like it, sorry.

CecilyP · 02/01/2012 19:54

I like it and think it is fine as a stand-alone name. If you love it, go for it.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 02/01/2012 19:56

I love it

oikopolis · 02/01/2012 20:07

It's a nickname for Mary. And nice enough. I would use Mary and nn Polly.

Hassled · 02/01/2012 20:09

I like Polly lots. Works well for baby and child and adult.

Dee03 · 02/01/2012 20:11

Love polly, but not any of the others!

Polkadotfanatic · 02/01/2012 20:25

Oikopolis, as per my Original Post, I dislike the name Mary, so was aking if it stood alone well as a name. Thanks for your post.

I guess I really do love Polly - even the silly things associated with the name that people are bound to say... polly parrot, pretty polly, polly wolly doodle etc...

Middle name suggestions then, girls?
