I think I regret my son's name

DS2's name is Zakariyah (Zak or Zaki for short)

It took us ages to choose a name - had to be cross cultural which complicated things.

I've since come across an Arun and an Aydin and every time I think about it I wish we'd gone with one of those. Easier to pronounce, spell, and I just think they sound better. Feel sick when I think about it.

DS1 is one and it's probably too late to change but I've lost all perspective on this so any views welcome, either way.

Was just about to say that Arun isn't a mispelling - its an asian name (don't think its specifically muslim though)

SoFreshNSoClean · 30/12/2011 11:34

Zak (and the full version) is a great name and much nicer than the other names you suggest.

fromheretomaternity · 29/12/2011 23:41

Ps Arun and Aydin are the right spellings - Muslim names.

Thanks all :-) I am feeling happier. I have started calling him Zaki (which is what ds1 calls him anyway!) and that works better for me than Zakariyah. I kind of knew it's too late to change it but it was one of those things I just couldn't stop obsessing over. I genuinely do feel better reading these responses.

I know Asian children named Arun and Aydin. I don't think the op is misspelling them.

FWIW I love Zak!

BettyBedlam · 29/12/2011 22:19

Zak is lovely Smile. I prefer it to the other two and seems cross cultural to me.

lurkinginthebackground · 26/12/2011 17:51

I like Zakariyah.
Yes it will get mis-spelt but so would Arun-Arron, Aarron?
Aydin-Hydn,Aiden etc etc.
I would stick with it.

Mollydoggerson · 24/12/2011 19:49

buyers remorse, don't worry it's normal.

Zack is lovely, don't dwell.

I got really sick of ds1's name when he was one because I was saying it all the time and obsessing over it, and like you I had put alot of thought into it. I like it alot now and have gotten over the name obsession.

guinealady · 24/12/2011 19:41

I think Zack (or Zak)'s a great name - possibly because when I was a little girl I knew a Zack I had a crush on... Xmas Blush

However I do think the more conventional spelling is nicer - Zachariah or Zachary. The way you've spelt it, to me, means he'll be having to spell it out to people all his life....but either way, Zak itself is short and sweet and he'll never have any trouble spelling that out.

nicknamenotinuse · 24/12/2011 16:22

Zak is the best name by a mile.

lovechoc · 24/12/2011 16:16

Personally I think you'd confuse your DS by changing his name now. I prefer Zak to the other two names you have mentioned. Nothing to stop you from just calling your DS 'Zak' all the time.

nulgirl · 24/12/2011 16:13

Agree with the others. Zak is lovely. Arun and Aydin just look like you are being imaginative with the spelling of Aaron and Aiden. He would have lifetime of correcting how people spell his name.

lottiegb · 24/12/2011 15:50

Zak is lovely. Aydin is very confusing and odd.

wahwahwah · 22/12/2011 17:39

Zak is great. It sounds like a superhero name!

TheMonster · 22/12/2011 17:38

Your name is much nicer than the mis-spelling od Aaron and Aidan.

theincredibequeenofwands · 22/12/2011 17:36

I have a Zach. Short for Zacharias.

It is the groooviest of names. Don't worry!

:)

LaydeeC · 22/12/2011 16:46

As above, you can change the forenames up to a year from the date of registration so if he's only just over a year, you may still have time.

oikopolis · 22/12/2011 16:08

Zak is classic. As others have said, it's been around for milennia so you must have been doing something right when you chose it! It's Hebrew so of course there will always be a squillion spellings for it... but very few people would not recognise it.

Aydin is dreadful.
Arun is ok, but Zak's better.

IndigoBell · 22/12/2011 14:46

Zak is lovely and much nicer than Arun and Aydin.

stressheaderic · 22/12/2011 14:40

Just think - those who chose Arun and Aydin only looked at page 1 of the alphabetical baby names book. You read right to the last page Xmas Smile

MamaLazarou · 22/12/2011 14:28

Zak is lovely. Just call him Zak.

jellybeans · 22/12/2011 13:08

Zak and it's longer forms are great names. Just call him Zak all the time and stop worrying!

ivykaty44 · 22/12/2011 11:42

Zac is a great name, it has lasted the test of time 2000 years and will not date like other names you could have choosen.

As for spelling I bet Aaran and Hayden will get fed up with having to spell their names and correct their names, no not Hayden it hasn't got an h at the front.

3boysgirlontheway · 22/12/2011 11:38

Zak is fab and much nicer in my opinion than your other choices. He must know his name by now, it would be very confusing to him if you changed it.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 21/12/2011 23:17

Maybe you just need to stop saying Zakariyah and just call him Zak :)

The whole thing is a bit of a mouthful - but you really don't need to use it.
