A replacement name urgently needed for a horrid name - help!

If DC is a DS then DH would like to name him after his elderly great -uncle (who has no children).

Lovely ,wonderful and only fair as DC is getting my family middle name.

Except he was Uncle Algernon (after the character - his mother was a big oscar wilde fan apparently)

And no.

DH agrees it is a bit unorthodox but sees it as a loved uncles name so thinks it will be fine.
No it won't - it is awful, a horid name (no offensive to anyone meant of course)

So I really need a replacement name that I can suggest to DH without getting my head bitten off.

Help

DD has an Algernon in her (YR) class.

personally, I think it would be fine as a middle name.... My grandfather nd Great Uncle were Albert & Ernest respectively, but I don't think either were serious contenders for DBs, even though they (and I) have 3 names each.

lisaro · 12/12/2011 22:06

A HAAAANDBAAG? Sorry - I love saying that.

hugsmummy · 12/12/2011 22:05

love algernon as does dh , he's a biggles fan btw . if we're ever blessed with ds5 then algernon nn algy it will be .

danceswithyarn · 12/12/2011 22:03

I like it.

Unusual, quirky even, while still being a name in it's own right.

Decent nns too - Al can't actually be offensive as a nn, and I think I prefer Algie to Alfie Grin

Go for it! He can always switch for his mn later if he wants. And I bet you'll make Uncle Algie's year too!

AnotherMincepie · 12/12/2011 20:13

What was Uncle Algernon's middle name?

MatLeaveForever · 12/12/2011 20:08

I don't think you should call your child a name that you don't even like, you should be excited about his name! I understand wanting to honour your uncle though. Could you just use the initial A instead or Alfred, Albert, Alan Xmas Hmm etc?

Or maybe there's a great anagram of Algernon that I haven't worked out yet!
Non-regal?! Maybe not!

mathanxiety · 12/12/2011 16:01

Another vote for Algernon (Algy) here. I think it's a perfectly nice name.

Redrubyblues · 12/12/2011 14:33

Is the elderly uncle rich perchance? Xmas Smile

Teapot13 · 12/12/2011 13:43

I kind of like Algernon, although I agree it's a bit OTT.

The obvious solution is to name him Earnest.

picklepepper · 12/12/2011 13:36

I too know an Algie, short for Algernon, though no-one uses his full name as far as I'm aware. I like it, it's cool, certainly not overused and a little Algie is super cute!

tammytoby · 12/12/2011 13:22

I like Algernon. Algy is a cute nickname imo. Similar to Archie/Archibald or Alfred/Alfie but nicer imo (I much prefer Algernon to Archibald or Alfred).

Lovely to honour your childless elderly great-uncle Smile.

shouldnotbehere · 12/12/2011 13:18

I have met an Algernon. Very very posh - Lord Lieutenant, country estate, house in London etc.

Clawdy · 12/12/2011 13:14

Algy sounds cute to me,but if you want to put DH off, isn't there a character in the Rupert Bear annuals called Algy Pug? As I remember though,he was rather cute as well....Xmas Smile

JuliaScurr · 12/12/2011 13:01

Baby, when you call me
You can call me Al
'Flowers for Algernon' - great book

AlmaWalkingInAWinterWonderland · 12/12/2011 12:57

I'd choose your own first name and have two middle names. I and my DCs have 2 (family) middle names and it's fine.

RillaBlythe · 12/12/2011 12:48

i know an algernon. he's very cool. can't it be used as another middle name? me & my kids all have 2 middle names.

Redrubyblues · 12/12/2011 12:34

"Algernon - Oscar Wilde used it for a brainless fop in "The Importance of Being Earnest".

Tell DH that your precious little bundle with a bright future in front of him is not going to be named after a 'brainless fop'.

I quite like the name Algernon/Algy Xmas Blush

PercyFilth · 12/12/2011 10:27

It's the kind of name that is (almost?) always shortened. I can't see that it's any worse than Archibald, and Archie is very popular, along with Alfie. So Algy sounds quite "now". Another possible shortening would be Gerry, but I quite like Algy.

Trills · 12/12/2011 10:11

Ernest, obviously.

glidingthrough · 12/12/2011 10:08

Unfortunatly can't ask uncle Algernon as he had a massive stroke a few years back is is dysphagic, aphasic, lives in a home, and can hardly move his limbs.

rachel234 · 12/12/2011 09:56

I know a little Algie - short for Algernon. I quite like it actually. You could shorten to Alie instead?

glidingthrough · 12/12/2011 09:55

I really don't like Aubrey - there is something sticky about it and just a bite brideshead for me (like Evelyn I suppose)
and my family middle name is actually a surname so can't imagin that being used instead.

OP posts:
Truffkin · 12/12/2011 09:55

Do you like Aubrey?

Or could you have Algernon as another middle name?

Is your family name one that could be a first name so you could switch them round?

Agree with the others that both should have the power to veto. I wanted my late Grandfather's name for our DS but DH hated it so we didn't.
