Met an adult Alannah, and she's very lovely. I like it.

mathanxiety · 11/12/2011 20:47

Lovely name. I think it has a very warm and international feel to it. I would pronounce it as if it was Irish 'a-LANN-ah' with the flat 'lann' as in 'Ann', and I love the meaning.

I think to avoid mispronunciations you might like to spell it Alannah, though people seem to be able to mangle pretty much anything ime.

NorkyPiesWithJingleBellsOn · 11/12/2011 19:14

Alana - one of my favourite names (before I read your thread, OP)

Rikalaily · 11/12/2011 11:13

My 3rd is called Alanah so I obviously love it Grin We pronounce it A-lar-na.

Ihatepeas · 11/12/2011 10:36

I went to school with an Alana never met another since. I think it's lovely but perfere the Alana spelling.

Rhubarbgarden · 10/12/2011 21:00

Not fond, personally. A bit fussy for me.

Lanabug · 10/12/2011 19:54

My DD is Alana (2.5) as my family are Irish. Lanabug (her knickname) is a Gaelic term of endearment. Generally I love it, although our GP did ask if her dad was called Alan when we registered her, and toddlers to tend to call her "nana" which is often mistaken for toddler speak for banana...Wink

lisianthus · 10/12/2011 19:39

Heh, i love it and am also humming Black Velvet. I really liked Alannah Myles. Btw, i would assume that the double n gives a flat "lann" sound, not a "lahn" sound.

minciepie · 09/12/2011 12:48

Sounds a bit made up to me, sorry.

sleepevader · 09/12/2011 04:35

Like It

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 09/12/2011 04:22

I like it, but prefer Alanna.

Get0rf · 09/12/2011 00:04

Am I the only person singing Black Velvet?

I don't like it at all. Very twee, very Appallachian hill farmer imo.

What about Adela?

smartyparts · 09/12/2011 00:01

Am in the minority, but I hate dislike it.

My fil is Alan, so it makes me think of his age range, blokey names, bit like Brian(a) or Nigel(la) or Colin(a).

OK, last one is not actually a name, but you get my drift.

aubergineinautumn · 08/12/2011 23:50

I prefer the Alana spelling

manicinsomniac · 08/12/2011 23:47

I think it's lovely

I know one Alana (age 14) and one Alannah (age 8) and they are both ponounced the same (Uh - lah - nuh)

suebfg · 08/12/2011 21:32

Not to my taste sorry

AnotherMincepie · 08/12/2011 21:32

Would assume Alana was a-LAHN-uh, and Alannah was a-LANN-uh.

AnotherMincepie · 08/12/2011 21:31

I like it.

FatimaLovesBread · 08/12/2011 20:55

Flowerface Are Alana and Alannah not the same just different spellings? I'd pronounce them the same Confused

OP I love it

Lonnie · 08/12/2011 20:50

Beautiful much nicer than the other you have on the list

Flowerface · 08/12/2011 20:10

It trips of the tongue nicely but the spelling is a bit flowery. My friend's two year old is Alana, which seems a bit less girly but still nice.

youtalkintomeunderthemiseltoe · 08/12/2011 19:03

Really like Elana but it's very similar to my DMs name and as it's looking like this baby may be born on her birthday, it would tip her over the edge of thinking the baby was hers if we gave her a similar name. She actually suggested when dd was born that we hyphenate her surname with my mums surname as she doesn't have a child with her name, she's divorced from my dad Hmm. ishoos

The only minor problem we have had is that people leave the H off which is easily sorted! We pronounce the middle bit Larn as in barn, Errrr, but then we are farmerish in the South westGrin.
She absolutely loves her name so i got something right. I've had loads of compliments over the years.
Its a beautiful name.

ThatllDoPig · 08/12/2011 18:50

I have a friend with an Elana, and think that is beautiful too.

youtalkintomeunderthemiseltoe · 08/12/2011 18:43

A La nah is how we would pronounce it, i'm Irish and it's far more common there than here. I like the way you have spelled it Cheeky, does she have difficulty with people asking the spelling? we have to spell our surname and i'd hate for her to have to spell both all the time.
