Marmite names which MNetters don't like..!!

It seems this topic board has loads of MN's 'marmite' names. Loads of threads along the lines off, 'DC would of been' or 'Names you Love.'.

...so I was just wondering, which names don't you like and why?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I also hate surnames as names.

FellatioNelson · 09/12/2011 05:00

I hate names that sound as if they belong to cheesy Hollywood stars in the 1950s-1970s.

Clinton, Troy, Brandon, Lee, Jason, Darren, Wayne, Duane, Shane, Vernon, Gary,

And for women I've always had a (probably irrational) dislike of Amanda, Beverley, Yvette, Yvonne, Elaine, Lorraine, Patricia, Pamela, Kimberley and Hilary.

There is another boy's name that fits into the list above which I detest but I can't think of it right now. It will come to me as soon as I press send!

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 04:28

Also I like some of the underused Biblical names (Caleb, Asa) but not the overdone ones like Noah or the way-out-there ones like Josiah.

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 04:27

I also love names like Peter, which you never hear of for little ones but it's still a name IYSWIM.

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 04:25

My name is Megan, chicky. :o Mostly get Meg though.

I don't like -ayden names, though Aidan is nice and just plain Cade is okay.

Any girls names ending in -lyn or -son.

Carter or Parker for either.

I like names like Sam, Charlie, Jack, Annie...though I do love Rex and Finn.

MarchelineWhatNot · 09/12/2011 04:22

I despise the name Olivia. It makes me wince.

Also, anything ending in May. Katie-May, Ellie-May, Lilly-May...

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 09/12/2011 04:16

You don't necessarily think 'how dated', but the names do nonetheless sound a bit blah now. No disrespect to people with those names.

I can just fully understand why people don't want to be Jack X or Olivia Y all their lives, nor be totally pinpointable to a certain decade forever after. There are so many names to choose from, zillions which won't date your child, which are equally lovely, if not more so, than the massively popular ones. I'm just giving my reasons for expressly avoiding very popular names.

Have never heard of a serial killer with the name Sebastian?!

RealLifeIsForWimps · 09/12/2011 03:35

I don't think you can really worry about names dating. I mean, if you meet someone in their 30's called Steve or Nick, you don't think "Oh my God. How dated," do you? It's just a common name for someone of that age. So in 30 years time, Oliver/ Jack etc will be perfectly normal names for 30 yr olds but all the babies will probably be Steve's.

In terms of negative connotations, you never know what name is going to gather those implications . It only takes one serial killer called Sebastian.........Grin

I think classic names (I'd include Henry, George, William, Charles, James, John, Edward, Alexander for boys) are classic within a certain class of people - I imagine that the popular names of the British kids on the Eton waiting list are the same as two generations ago. However, the popularity of those classic names amongst the bulk of the population waxes and wanes. There were more Tyler's than John's in 2010.

Just to add re popular names dating - some perfectly nice names end up dating (I mean, Tracy no longer has particularly nice connotations, but it derived popularity from Grace Kelly/High Society), such as names from my generation.

Claire, Sarah, Joanne, Karen, etc - are all nce names, but because they were so well-used they now sound dated to outpr ears because they're so associated with a period in time.

If you choose one of the current lovely, popular names - it will sound dated to the next generaton just from pure over-use now.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 09/12/2011 02:41

There are lots of names which I don't understand the popularity of - usually (but not exclusively) very faddy ones, which will date terribly.

To the person on the first page who said just choose a popular name if you like it - the reason people avoid popular names is because they date, and sometimes they date badly (Kevin, Brian, Tracy, Sharon).

I'm not going to list names I don't like as it's just my taste and isn't a reflection on anything else.

Funny that DS's name isn't on here - if I said what it was, everyone would pile on to say they really don't like it, but it's so out of fashion right now that no-one even thinks of it!! Grin Bonus: he will be the only one in his class.

Dragon, yep, Prince Harry has Henry on his birth cert.
Never ever heard him been referred to as Henry though.
From Birth.

I have a list as long as my arm of names that make my teeth itch, some may be quite popular amongst MNers.
But just posting them all feels really mean. If I upset someone (Like if I'd have said I don't like Oliver , which I like actually, and upset Everlong whose GS's name has such meaning).

I think that sometimes names just fit. I would never have called a child Arthur, but I know a delightful boy whose name just fits.

bigkidsdidit · 08/12/2011 17:26

Sarge I have a Bertie (but we went with the full Albert on bc) too and he is mostly called Bert now Confused poor lad! Sometimes I hear myself saying it in public and think people nearby must by thinking to themselves "fucking hell, there's a little baby called Bert" Grin

I too loathe Madison. I wonder why? It seems innocuous. I don't like American ish names such as Brooke either and know a couple of little ones so it appears to be getting more popular.

Ipomegranate · 08/12/2011 17:08

Neither of my DC's names have come up, even though a couple of friends told me they hated DS's name before he was born - they asked me what names I was thinking of then v rudely gave me their opinion!

They both went on to give their own DC names I didn't like but being the nice person I am I passed no comment, just smiled inwardly.

Dragonwoman · 08/12/2011 16:49

Am I right in thinking that Kaitlyn is supposed to be pronounced 'cashleen' ?

Ragwort · 08/12/2011 16:45

Richard is a lovely name; agree that some of those 70s names need a come back, lots of names that you never hear any more (including mine Xmas Grin).

What about straightforward names like Susan, Jane, Mary, Sally, Susannah, Sarah, Melanie, Katherine (do doubt that one is due for a comeback) - haven't heard of those for ages. Or for boys - David, John, Peter? Or are they all considered too dull - in fact they would be quite original these days !
