It's my brothers name and as an adult he always calls himself John now, which I prefer. We used to call him Jonny when he was a child.

I really like Jonathan! You don't hear it too often on babies and small children these days so it seems quite fresh, but still classic. Nicholas gives me a similar vibe if you are looking for more suggestions.

I don't think I like the Johnathan version. it's like John then sticking the rest on as an after thought. I like Jonathan.

Never seen it spelt with an 'h' either - you'd be setting him up for a lifetime of correcting people's spelling of it, I'd imagine...

I don't think I've ever seen it spelt that way. It is Jonathan in every English version of the Bible as far as I know.

I have a 7 yr old Johnathan. I hate John with a vengeance so he is always a Johnathan. People often spell his name wrong as it isn't that common to spell it with the first 'h' and alot of the named stuff in shops is spelt without the 'h'.

Jonathan is a FANTASTIC name. Mine is 19mths and known as Jonny or Jonathan (except MIL who calls him Jonty).
He will prob become a Jono or a Jojo though as that is what ds1 and his buddys call him when they are being 'cute' to him and little Jonathan usualy giggles in delight that the 'big guys' are including him!
We have had so many lovely comments about his name usualy from slightly older peolpe and along the lines of 'oh how lovely to hear a 'proper' name for a change'........ sometimes I wonder if that is in responce to dc 2 and 5s names though Grin.

Great to see so many positive responses to Jonathan. Am not offended Moondog - as you say if you don't know one your opinion will differ. Have to say his behaviour today couldnt in any way be described as scrumptious though!

I have a Jonathan and after he was born I remembered how many horrible Jonathans I'd known in the past!
It is good for diminutives but rotten for spelling, as DrNortherner points out.
Ours calls himself Jonny. Also know a Jonathan who calls himself Joss.

I have a cousin Jonathan and he is lovely Smile He does however get called Johno....

I always find it tricky to spell Hmm

I know a Jonathan who has always been called Joe for short, so there's another option for him.

Putting aside the fact that the only Jonathan I know is a Bad Man (which colours my reaction to the name unfairly), you can do a lot with Jonathan as others have said - even contract it to Nathan for something completely different! I love Jonty too. It's sort of a male version of Elizabeth in terms of flexibility.

Prefer Jonathan to John.

Also prefer Jonny to Johnny.

The 'h' is just a bit superfluous.

I love that name. It can be shortened to various other names as already suggested.

I don't have a Jonathan, but I'd like one.
