Hates the name my DH is set on

Hi everyone... This is only my 2nd post scary haha
I'm due my 2nd baby (DD is 5 from a previous relationship) in May
All very exciting except for the name my DH has fallen in love with (even before we started trying to get pregnant)
If its a boy he wants to call him Leland (as in the son of Dog the Bounty hunter)
I thought he would get over this phase but hea dead set on it.. Personally I hate the name, I think it's a little chavvy, it has grown on me slightly but that's about it !
I've been mentioning other names as and when but he's stuck with this (although we dot know the sex yet)
Am I being unreasonable to hate this name so much or do I need to let him get his way and hope it will grow on me ????

I vetoed OH's first name choice for a ds in my first pg, but then we were blessed with a dd.

In my 2nd pg we found out bump, would be a boy and so the name i vetoed 4 years previous came to the fore and i absolutley fell in love with it!

I know of a few people with a Leland - although it's not my thing, but personally i couldn't settle with a name i wasn't in LOVE with!

How about Leighton / Layton ?

exoticfruits · 02/12/2011 22:16

Don't have it. Both have to agree on names. My DCs all have compromise names.

Wafflepuss · 02/12/2011 22:13

As in Daf? Nothing like being named after an 18 tonne truck.

pranma · 02/12/2011 22:09

Try Lachlan?
Esme is definitely a real name-an old one at that.

kerala · 02/12/2011 20:34

Its not good. You both have to like it I still hanker after Esme but DH insists its not a real name and I must have made it up Hmm so vetoed it.

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 02/12/2011 00:27

n.b. my DH wanted Jesse James Shock

Like Jesse, but hated the pair together. He would not compromise, so I had to d a blanket 'no'

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 02/12/2011 00:25

You are both entitled to give an unchallenged 'No' to names you hate. Be prepared (both of you) to compromise on names you feel not fussed about (they can grow on you as the pregnancy progresses) but hate is another matter.

Your DH should appreciate that you would not expect him to live with a name he hates.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 02/12/2011 00:14

Gawd, couldn't even spell the bloody name right...

Apologies. Blush

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 02/12/2011 00:13

The choice of name isn't the problem here. Well, it is; Leyland is beyond awful, partly because of the reason behind choosing it. A bounty hunter...? Really? Shock Grin

The main problem is the fact that you have a DH who seemingly thinks it's OK to have an absolute say over this. In whose parallel universe is this even remotely OK?

snuffaluffagus · 01/12/2011 22:11

As in Leland Daf? Ha, god stand your ground girl! It needs to be a joint decision, he can't just insist on a name you hate (and visa versa).

lottiegb · 01/12/2011 22:11

Yes, terrible and sounds like a brand name. He must be able to come up with others he likes - or a list of those he hates, then, so long as these aren't on your 'like' list you can choose!

Sassee · 01/12/2011 07:40

It's dreadful! Isn't Leyland a make of tractor?!

Newtothisstuff · 30/11/2011 21:42

Thanks everyone... Glad you all think it's as awful as I do !! I don't mind it as a middle name because noone has to know then hahaSmile

stegasaurus · 30/11/2011 20:25

I hate DH's favourite name, but compromised and let him have it as DD's middle name. Is that an option for you? Definitely make sure the first name is something you both agree on.

Catsycat · 30/11/2011 20:10

I agree with others who've said it would ideally be a joint decision to choose a name. However, you're doing all the work pg and birth-wise, so IMO you get the final decision. That said, I don't think either parent should be able to impose a name that the other parent really hates - there must be some middle ground, or an alternative he can be convinced of. Alternatively, just hope it's a girl Wink. Good luck!

MitziKinsky · 30/11/2011 19:42

The pet idea is a good one.

Sounds like a lorry to me.

33goingon64 · 30/11/2011 19:29

I thought if Twin Peaks as well. I still have nightmares about Leland.

Sibling4 · 30/11/2011 19:22

Show him twin peaks, that'll put him off leyland

lisaro · 30/11/2011 18:43

Dear God! Please put your foot down - that's awful!

thebigkahuna · 30/11/2011 18:36

WTF is dog the bounty hunter?

Sloobreeus · 30/11/2011 18:34

Say no to Leland if you hate it. Draw up a short list each of, say, six names. Don't look at each other's lists until they are complete. If there is no common name, go through the baby book and try again until there is a name that is on both lists. We did this for DD1, who is named Eleanor.

ZZZenAgain · 30/11/2011 18:34

if you really hate the name, I think you had better fight it.

strawberrypenguin · 30/11/2011 18:32

*name obviously Grin

strawberrypenguin · 30/11/2011 18:31

Names should really be a joint choice you will after all have to hear/use it or a long time! I would offer a compromise and use it as a middle name while finding a first mane you both love

Newtothisstuff · 30/11/2011 17:30

I'll give anything a try Grin
