Mary-Jane

This is not terribly urgent, as I am only ttc, and after a few miscarriages over the last 18 months we have been mulling over names to keep our spirits up Smile

This is baby 5 (or will be) so likely to be the last, unless I get my way and get a 6 too (unlikely!), and I have so many names i want to use,

We both like Mary and Jane as possibilities (along with many others including Priscilla, Thisbe, Gloria, Susan, Angela, Thora)

I know hyphenated names are frowned upon on mn, and actually I am not a big fan, but is Mary-Jane more acceptable?
I love both names, but can't make up my mind whether hyphenating them is rubbish, and I prefer just Mary or Jane as a name on it's own.

I am never known by only the first half of my hyphenated name, never. Sometimes the initials but never just either of the two names.

Hatwoman · 01/12/2011 00:03

I'm not suprised the mum corrects you though - dd has a similar hyphenated name and no-one ever calls her by the first bit - and I'd correct them straight away if they did - it just isn't her name. I can't explain why but it's somehow not the same as using a standard diminutive.

Letchlady · 30/11/2011 20:10

No, Jane - I've had this conversation at work and several of my older colleagues remember it being called that - I dont use it now, but it was certainly around when I was a child and that connotation is very real in my mind Grin

BibiBelle · 30/11/2011 18:59

oh boo tummytickler, you've walked away from that one too easily

lisianthus · 30/11/2011 18:58

I rather like it, but it reminds me of A.A. Milne- "what's the matter with Mary-Jane? It's lovely rice pudding for dinner again!"

PercyFilth · 30/11/2011 15:36

It's just a translation though, isn't it - 'marijuana' is similar to the Spanish version of Mary Jane. It really wouldn't bother me in the slightest. It's still pretty, and it's not as though you're proposing to call her Weed or Skunk.

tummytickler · 30/11/2011 13:03

Oh dear - I had no idea about the drug connection! I must live in a bubble! Maybe we should choose between Mary or Jane (or one of the others!)
Mary-Jane is definately scrapped now!

Shoes
Drugs
Spiderman
in that order.

I love the name Mary, but the -Jane bit ruins it for me.

Chockiebiccie · 30/11/2011 08:38

Pot for me too. If I came accross a kid with that name I'd wonder if the parents were crusties and trying to be ironic

JaneRustle · 30/11/2011 08:26

I cannot believe ANYBODY refers to their "lady bits" (gag) as Mary-Jane, so I am assuming your post to that effect is a joke.

miaowmix · 29/11/2011 21:39

I just think of aa milne so it's cute to me {innocent]

TCOB · 29/11/2011 21:35

Love the name Mary, love the name Jane. We talked about this for DD but sadly it means weed to many, many people. The joke will wear thin for poor little MJ at some point.

Letchlady · 29/11/2011 21:33

Noooo, not Mary-Jane!

Mary Jane is the name for one's lady bits. To me, that would be like naming your child fanjo!

I actually know a child called Mary-Jane, and I just can't bring myself to call her by her full name... so I often just call her Mary, but the mother corrects me every time, so I do and every time I do I inwardly cringe.

MarthasHarbour · 29/11/2011 21:29

Drugs here too

Although i do love the name, its my middle name and my sisters middle name so would be cute..

Meglet · 29/11/2011 21:25

No.

Makes me think of pot. And shoes.

Takver · 29/11/2011 21:24

Sadly says cannabis to me too - but maybe only the case for older people, and I guess more a US thing as well.

Its a pretty name, though.

FirstNoelle · 29/11/2011 20:53

Drugs and shoes do hover in the back of my mind, but mainly I think of the wonderful Mary J Blige, so it can't be bad.

argylesocks · 29/11/2011 19:18

Love it! It's cool and classic and much more interesting than plain Mary or Jane. I think it's cute and retro.

ScabbyHorse · 29/11/2011 18:44

I think its cute

StrictlySazz · 29/11/2011 18:38

I think it is lovely and makes a change from the scores of Evie's/Isla's and Hannah's we have here Smile

BTW I see in my crystal ball that moving on from Mary-Jane, the next fashionable drug will be called Betty. Just sayin Wink

BibiBelle · 29/11/2011 18:37

That's also true MrsPlug which is why she didn't use Lois for one of her DDs Grin

MrsPlugThePlumber · 29/11/2011 18:31

It reminds me of Spiderman!

BibiBelle · 29/11/2011 18:29

I know one. She has always been referred to that in full as opposed to Mary OR Jane. It was used as a family name (after her mother and grandmother) Her mum wasn't aware of the drugs reference but it have never been an issue and there are a lot of pretty songs about her GrinWink

Shortened to M-J ONLY once she attended Uni away from home and when people phoned her house and asked for M-J her mother used to hang up on them saying 'nobody here by that name'

She has chosen not to give any of her 3 DD's a hyphenated name but that was more a personal choice than because of any horrible childhood experiences.

Do please be aware that Mary means bitter and Jane means Gift from God so on occassion she has referred to herself as a 'bitter gift from God' Grin
