Amanda

I love this name, and have always wanted to use it for a DD. I'm not keen on unusual names and having grown up with a really difficult name to spell I wanted to use one that everyone knows.

However I'm now a bit unsure because some people I've mentioned it too have said it sounds old-fashioned (and it's true they are dying out, it's more our generation) and DP went as far to say "what kind of a name is Amanda" (although he seems keen on ethnic names from his country, which I really wouldn't want especially as a first name)

Any thoughts?

Love Amanda too. Had a friend with that name and the nn was Mindy.

ChooChooWowWow · 29/11/2011 17:31

Our hampsters are called Milly, Molly and Mandy Grin

PercyFilth · 29/11/2011 16:37

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milly-Molly-Mandy

Milly and Molly have enjoyed recent popularity, maybe it's Mandy's turn Smile

Mind you, there is that awful Barry Manilow song, so I'd stick with Amanda. Grin

ChooChooWowWow · 29/11/2011 16:03

I got called Randy Mandy as well. I love my name but as a child was always called Mandy.
Woe betide anyone who tries that now I am Amanda,

PercyFilth · 29/11/2011 00:13

If you are OK with Mandy, then go ahead. Mind you, I've only known one Mandy, the others have all been Amanda. One of them was sometimes called 'Amandine' (said 'A-mon-deen' in the French manner) so there you have an example of an elongated nn.

Always best not to tell too many people what name you are planning to use to avoid comments like that from exotic fruits

Janoschi · 27/11/2011 19:38

I like Mandy more than Amanda, actually. I thought of it for our DD but it would've been a disaster as my DP is Andy.

exoticfruits · 27/11/2011 17:16

I like it and it is in a different league from Winifred which is dire.

likethemoon · 27/11/2011 17:01

ceecee, Winnifred is a lovely name and I'm sure your DD is too! I was also pleasantly surprised that so many others liked it as well, especially after all the comments I have been getting in RL.

I think it's great to go with any name you love especially if it's a revival! I'm just surprised Amanda is being revived already but not dissing your choice, I have lovely friends called Amanda and I've just named my daughter Winnifred!

upahill · 27/11/2011 15:00

My friend is an Amanda.
It is never shortened to Mandy ever!!
It's often shortened to Mands which she likes or Mand but most people call her Amanda.

CEDR · 27/11/2011 14:56

I like Amanda, but it can also be Mandy, Manda, Amy, Mad, MAddie etc

AberdeenAngusina · 27/11/2011 14:40

I know a 16 year old Amanda, who's known by her full name. It's lovely.

ShengdanRoad · 27/11/2011 13:34

My best friend is Amanda and she's never been Mandy. Sometimes Ammy, mostly Amanda.

likethemoon · 27/11/2011 12:42

ceecee, I've had a lot of comments about it being eighties but I'm going to go with it anyway - especially as it has been approved by the MN jury!:)

I am amazed so many like it! Very eighties!!

NotnOtter · 26/11/2011 23:35

the only Amandas i know never get shortened
Lovely

likethemoon · 26/11/2011 23:33

I'm going to go with it :) It's really encouraging that many of you like it too. Am intrigued why so many people are anti-Mandy though!

I like it and I know an Amanda who is never called Mandy.

CharlieBoo · 26/11/2011 19:52

My neighbour Is called Amanda, Mandy for short and the gets called MAAAAAND!! Not good

MatLeaveForever · 26/11/2011 18:23

Yes I do like my name now, as a child I decided it had too many vowels but I'm happy with the number of vowels now!
The 'man' is my name didn't bother me, although my married surname also has a 'man' in it which my parents couldn't have predicted at the time. I've only met a couple of other Amanda's all about my age. So there will probably only be one in her class but that's no bad thing.
Good luck whatever name you decide.

smartyparts · 26/11/2011 17:11

Because it's a mum's generation name, people don't seem to like it as much as granny type names, iyswim.

It's a perfectly nice name and I bet it will come back into vogue along with Sarah, Clare, Michelle,Joanna etc. Or, everyone I went to school with!

Mandy, however, is not good.

Ihavewelliesbutitssunny · 26/11/2011 17:04

It is a nice name but quite old fashioned imo. I think the youngest Amandas around now are in their early twenties so not ready for a revival yet.

LaTristesse · 26/11/2011 16:56

I think it's lovely, and would have been happy to consider it for DDs name until DH pointed out that he has 2 Amandas in his catalogue of ex's! Go for it!

likethemoon · 26/11/2011 15:23

Randy Mandy! I didn't think of that one! A friend of mine also mentioned that she could be teased because the word "man" is in there... although tbh kids find a way to make fun of almost any name! So do you like your name (apart from that little blip!) Amanda?
